Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League is the product of a long-enduring campaign among fans who wanted to see the film the way its original director intended. Many would agree that the 2017 theatrical release was a far cry from Snyder’s interpretation, thus earning harsh criticism and even becoming a laughingstock.
It’s no secret that there were a lot of problems with Joss Whedon’s take on the project, and one of the most popular controversies was Superman’s infamous “mustache-gate.” The editing team covered Henry Cavill’s mustache using CGI during the reshoots, and the outcome looked quite strange and scary at the same time.
Zack Snyder Reacts To Henry Cavill’s Infamous Mustache-Gate On 2017’s Justice League
This “mustache-gate” issue is one of the reasons why Zack Snyder persevered to finish the Snyder Cut. The filmmaker admitted being aware of the controversy; however, he also claims to have never seen the actual movie. He reveals to MTV News that he found out about Cavill’s infamous CGI lip through Internet memes:
“I’ve only seen it in memes. It was funny because part of me is happy that we were able to have that not be the total legacy of the hard work that he had done over the last ten years, you know? It’s sad to think that that could have been the last view that people had of Superman was with that, whatever that is.”
This version of Henry Cavill’s Superman would have been the most unflattering look that fans would remember, and Snyder did not want that to happen. Because of the recent overhaul happening within the newly established DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s legacy, it is unlikely that fans will see the Man of Steel star portray the character again.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League was ultimately released in 2021, and viewers owe it to Snyder that the movie was finally given the justice it deserves. Fans and critics praise his version for its meatier content, stunning cinematography, and overall grit that truly pays homage to the DC world.
As for Henry Cavill’s controversial mustache, the actor sported one due to his appearance in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Because of time constraints, the team had to resort to computer effects to cover up the blunder, forgetting that fans have keen eyes and no mistake can escape their eagle-like vision.
Why The Snyder Cut Is So Important To Fans And Zack Snyder Himself
The Snyder Cut features a four-hour film that only borrowed a few scenes from the 2017 version. The rest are fresh footages that offered alternative dialogues, and that the filmmaker shot but never used. Gone are the cringe-worthy lines and gross scenes. The movie’s score has also been replaced with a new sound.
Despite the length of the movie, and some critics calling it unnecessary, the film was clearly made for fans. Snyder did not get paid for making the revision of the material; moreover, there is no sequel in line. It was made out of pure passion and for the fans who stood by and believed in him all throughout the journey.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is available to stream on HBO Max.
