Zachary Levi Reveals Secret Behind Infamous Shazam 2 Wonder Woman Body Double Scene: “Gal Gadot was busy working”

Shazam! Fury of the Gods premiered in theaters early this year, and while the movie failed to meet fans’ expectations, it is only fair to say that it had some good surprises in it. The movie focused on the Shazam family and their quest to take down the Daughters of Atlas. But, there’s one major DC character that made a not-so-shocking appearance: Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

Gadot’s character appeared in the film twice, and although her cameo was not entirely a surprise, it was still a treat for fans who love Wonder Woman. Warner Bros has previously revealed Gadot’s participation in the project; meanwhile, director David F. Sandberg was not particularly happy with the spoiler.

Shazam Actor Zachary Levi Revealed How They Pulled Wonder Woman Cameo

Zachary Levi, lead star of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, spoke with Entertainment Weekly and discussed Gal Gadot’s cameo scene in the movie. He was thrilled to see the actress on the set and even happier that she agreed to join the film:

I was just stoked that she was down to it. She crushes it. It was really cool that Gal was down to play in our sandbox.”

Sandberg and Levi wanted to include Wonder Woman in the story since the movie focused heavily on Greek mythology. The Justice League star was totally down for the game, but her schedule was not cooperative. Levi revealed how they managed to pull the scene:

She was busy working. She was shooting something else entirely, so we had a body double on our end. Then we were able to shoot her stuff on another side. I think they did a great job seamlessly cutting all that together.”

He also noted how Billy Batson was over the moon about Wonder Woman joining the club:

I love that Billy is so in love with her. He’s so infatuated, and he’s so nervous! That was fun to tap into. It felt like going back to being my 17-year-old self.”

Superhero cameos are quite a common trend now, and as previously seen in the original 2019 film, Superman made a surprise appearance at the end. At the moment, it is uncertain whether a third installment will push through given Shazam 2’s poor box office performance. But, if Levi would be given another shot, he would like to invite one particular DC character:

Maybe Green Lantern? I’d like to see Green Lantern help us fight the hordes of undead. I think that would be really cool.”

Because of the major franchise revamp that occurred at DC Studios headed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, Gal Gadot’s future as Wonder Woman remains in question. Just after the two executives took their positions, they announced that Patty Jenkin’s planned Wonder Woman 3 will not move forward.

Was Wonder Woman’s Cameo In Shazam 2 Necessary?

Gal Gadot’s cameo appearance in Shazam! Fury of the Gods was once the subject of debate and even considered by fans a mistake. Sandberg revealed he wanted to continue the movie’s trend of teasing fans with headless cameos (via Polygon):

Wonder Woman was always in the script, and we wanted to poke fun about the whole headless cameo in the first movie, with Superman. So, we wanted to tease people a bit. But you can only do that if you actually have Wonder Woman then show up at the end. Otherwise, people would be way too pissed off.”

Wonder Woman’s cameo scene, as it turned out, was just a humorous play to excite fans. Nothing in the film suggested she would have a pivotal role in the whole story.
