Rising to stardom at such a young age had its fair share of drawbacks for Keira Knightley. After starting out as a child actress, Knightley soon made it to the big leagues following her performance in acclaimed projects, Bend It Like Beckham and the Johnny Depp-led Pirates of the Caribbean. But becoming a global star in her teenage years wasn’t all sunshine and roses for the actress, as dealing with the constant media scrutiny was a heavy task.
Considering the actress was only a teenager when she made her way into the big leagues, some people didn’t stop commenting on her physical appearance, as Knightley recounts some strange incidents.
Keira Knightley Recounts Encountering Hate Comments in Her Teenage Years
Throughout her decades-long career, Keira Knightley has experienced everything, from garnering immense love and respect from her admirers to being ridiculed for her physical appearance. The latter mostly took place in her younger days in the film industry, as the Pirates of the Caribbean Star revealed she was often ridiculed by interviewers, who critiqued her acting skills and body. She recalled,
“There was a very long time when [interviewers] were all: ‘Well you’re a sh*t actress and you’re anorexic and people hate you’ which, for a teenager or somebody in their early 20s, is a very strange thing,”
However, the actress never let the inflammatory remarks get into her skin, eventually proving her doubters wrong, and even landing an Oscar nomination for her work in 2005’s Pride & Prejudice.
Keira Knightley Doesn’t Regret Rising to Stardom at a Young Age
Although Keira Knightley claimed she’d never encourage her daughters to become a young star in Hollywood, the actress doesn’t regret rising to stardom at such a young age. Even though the initial years in Hollywood weren’t easy for the young star and believes that her daughters should be allowed to enjoy their teenage years in privacy, she wouldn’t have done her life any differently. She explained,
“Oh, 100%, I’d absolutely tell her not to. I would 150 million trillion percent be totally discouraging of [her] doing anything like that. If the kid is going to do that then they have to do it on their own. And I would say teenage years should be done privately… Saying that, I don’t regret it – I wouldn’t do my life any differently,”
With the actress slowly approaching her 40s in the coming years, Knightley has succeeded in balancing her professional and personal lives, as she continues to thrive forward.
