“Jesus just let the character stay dead”: Fans Less than Enthusiastic with Reports of a ‘Young Dexter’ Series in the Works at Showtime

Showtime will not be moving forward with a Dexter: New Blood sequel even after its phenomenal success. Instead, a Young Dexter prequel is reportedly in the works, so fans are assured that the premium channel is not leaving them empty-handed. As part of the merging process with Paramount+, Showtime is exploring new ways to bring new Dexter stories.

The Young Dexter series will feature an earlier version of the titular anti-hero. Showtime has not given any comment about this, but according to TVLine, the network is considering a number of Dexter iterations.

Dexter: New Blood ended with the lead character fatally shot by his son Harrison, and showrunner Clyde Phillips looks at this as an opportunity to explore more avenues within the narrative. He told Deadline:

If [Showtime] asks me if I’d like to make a continuation of this, I would say yes. I have a lot of things going on but I would drop everything for this and say yes in one second.”

Phillips talked about Harrison’s complicated character and how he has the “seeds of the dark passenger” inside him. He also mentioned how he “brings a different perspective to the vigilantism” more than Dexter did.

Harrison is such a complicated character, and he has within him the seeds of the dark passenger. He’s capable. Look at that takedown of Dexter in the end, what’s in Harrison is that he has to kill this man.”

‘Dexter: New Blood’ Season 2 has been cancelled

Fans were absolutely devastated after the network cancelled the upcoming sequel, and there is no doubt that Dexter is never coming back, as confirmed by the showrunner:

I have three words for you: Dexter is dead. I wouldn’t do that to the audience. It would be dishonest. Here, there is no question that this is the finale of Dexter. Dexter is dead.”

The studio is, indeed, pushing for a Young Dexter prequel, an idea that Showtime has been brewing for a while. Fans would recall the several flashbacks within the series where it featured the titular character in his younger days and showed how his adoptive-father Harry taught him to become a serial killer.

There are no hints about the plot of the upcoming Young Dexter prequel as of yet, but the success of the Dexter: New Blood franchise will have to influence the fans if the studio wants a repeat performance.
