James Gunn became the subject of vehement backlash from the moment he dropped the bomb of replacing Henry Cavill’s Superman, and honestly, it’s only been downhill for the filmmaker ever since.
A brand new mishap seems to have entered Gunn’s already long list of epic screw-ups as The Suicide Squad director became a laughingstock on Twitter for his shocking ignorance about a rather popular actor, Logan Lerman.
The DC Studios co-chief recently took to Twitter to debunk a rumor about Superman’s recasting being close to the horizon. Little did Gunn know he was merely digging a grave for himself when he dismissed the idea of Lerman playing the titular character by claiming to be unaware of him, to begin with. Not a big Percy Jackson fan, huh?
James Gunn Claims He Doesn’t Know Who Logan Lerman Is
A little birdie told Grace Randolph, a film critic and comic book writer, that James Gunn had been eyeing Hunters star Logan Lerman for DCU’s Superman now that Henry Cavill won’t be portraying Clark Kent anymore. But clearly, that wasn’t the case because for Gunn to even so much as consider Lerman for the role, he would have to know him first.
Responding to Randolph’s conjecture about Lerman potentially stepping into Clark Kent’s shoes, Gunn, 56, claimed he didn’t even know The Three Musketeers star in the first place. “For the record, I don’t know who that is,” he said. But it didn’t take him long to realize the error of his ways when fans started to hurl derisive remarks at him for his sheer lack of awareness about an otherwise famous actor.
The Peacemaker director then elucidated in his defense, pointing out how his tweet wasn’t meant to be “a dig” Lerman, 31. “I don’t know lots of actors’ names,” Gunn added. He further claimed that he’d later come to “recognize [Lerman] from stuff” after fans reminded him of the actor, and also believed him to be a “talented” star.
“Guys, this isn’t a dig at the actor. I don’t know lots of actors’ names. Now that you tell me who he is, I recognize him from stuff and think he’s talented. But I’ve never met him, and he’s never been part of a conversation about playing Superman.”
But of course, it had been too late by the time Gunn tried to clarify his seemingly innocent mistake because people were already busy laughing at him, some even insulting the DCU co-CEO for the same.
James Gunn Gets Called A “Disaster” for Not Knowing Logan Lerman
In light of the same, a Twitter user called the Guardians of the Galaxy director a “disaster” for his limited knowledge about other actors, not to mention someone as popular as Lerman who is known for his role in the Percy Jackson film series, despite running “a Hollywood studio.”
Lerman has starred in a number of renowned films, including The Perks of Being a Wallflower wherein he collaborated with Emma Watson, 2011’s The Three Musketeers, Josh Boone’s rom-com, Stuck in Love, and of course, Percy Jackson, the famous fantasy/adventure film series wherein he played the titular hero of the same name.
Sure, Gunn isn’t supposed to be friends with each and every actor to ever have had a career in Hollywood, but to think he didn’t even know Lerman does seem to be a bit of a stretch. But then again, one can never tell, after all, it’s Gunn we’re talking about.
