In The Amazing Spider-Man films released in 2012 and 2014, Andrew Garfield took on the role of Spider-Man. His depiction of Peter Parker, a young and socially awkward high school student’s transformation into an iconic superhero, garnered acclaim for his charismatic performance and distinct interpretation of the character.
During an interview, Andrew Garfield discussed the potential of handing over the mantle to Miles Morales, once the trilogy-concluding film, Amazing Spider-Man 3, completed its journey. But that never happened.
Andrew Garfield Wanted Miles Morales To Take Over The Franchise
Andrew Garfield expressed his thoughts, emphasizing the significance of Miles Morales in the character’s comic book legacy. He believed there was potential for such a transition and was genuinely interested in finding a meaningful way for coexistence or succession. While he didn’t have a definitive solution, he considered it a vital and graceful step forward.
Garfield elaborated further on why he believed the world is undoubtedly prepared for a Spider-Man of mixed racial heritage, given that Morales is of both Black and Hispanic descent.
Garfield said (via IGN):
“I think one of the amazing things about Spider-Man is that you don’t see skin color when he’s in the suit. You don’t see any religious beliefs. You don’t see any denominations. Everyone can project themselves into that suit. It’s incredibly powerful in that way. So of course I think it’s important that the openness, the casting, in terms of who could be Spider-Man, could be absolutely anyone. A hero is a hero, whether you’re a man, woman, gay, lesbian, straight, black, white, or red all over — it doesn’t matter.”
Given that he had signed a contract for three films, it’s reasonable to assume that he might have expressed interest in passing the torch to Miles Morales’ character after The Amazing Spider-Man 3. As fate would have it, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 failed to materialize, leaving fans of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man interpretation wondering about the actor’s future in the franchise. He did, however, make a comeback in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Andrew Garfield On His Version’s Relationship With Iron Man
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Peter Parker, shared a close bond with Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. Despite Stark’s initial playboy and billionaire persona, he became a father figure to Parker, who lacked a male role model in his upbringing. Over time, their connection deepens, with fans speculating that Stark’s role in Avengers: Endgame was primarily to reunite with Parker.
But, had Tom Holland not assumed the role of Spider-Man, and Andrew Garfield had continued in the role, it’s intriguing to ponder how his dynamic with the billionaire Avenger might have unfolded. A similar query arose when Garfield engaged in an online Q&A session with GQ.
Garfield told GQ:
“I definitely think Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man would be pretty suspect of MCU Iron Man. I think he would be a little turned off by the excess, the billionaire, trillionaire status of Iron Man. I think it would rub my version of Spider-Man the wrong way. But maybe there could be some influence there. Maybe my Peter Parker could wake Tony Stark up to his own egoic drives a little bit.”
To some extent, Garfield’s response appears fitting, as his portrayal of Peter Parker might not have placed the same level of trust in Stark as Holland’s did. Additionally, their connection would likely have leaned more toward a ‘colleague’ dynamic rather than the father-son relationship evident between Holland and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.
