Sharon Stone is one of the most established actresses in the industry and is quite well known for standing up for what she believes in. The actress became one of the most popular s*x symbols of the industry in the 90s’ which led to her getting many leading roles throughout the decade including her portrayal of Catherine Tramell in the 1992 movie, Basic Instinct.
Sharon Stone went on to receive the best reviews of her career as she gave the performance of a lifetime for her portrayal of Ginger McKenna in Martin Scorsese’s Casino movie. The actress also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in the movie. However, Stone recently revealed in an interview that she allegedly had to fight for her nomination.
Sharon Stone turned down a sure shot win of an Academy Award for a nomination in another category
Sharon Stone was up against many incredible actresses back in 1995 when she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in Martin Scorsese’s Casino movie. However, according to the actress, she was being pursued by others to compete in the Best Supporting Actress category instead. She said,
“I was super surprised. I mean, they told me, ‘We can run for Supporting Actress and you’ll win the Oscar. You can’t win for leading lady but they’re never going to let you get a leading lady, Oscar,’ because it was me and I said, ‘But I am the leading lady in the film, so I want to run for leading lady.’ And they said, ‘But you won’t win.’ And I said, ‘I don’t care. I’m not in it to win it – that’s not the point here.’”
Sharon Stone eventually did lose the Oscar Award that year to Susan Sarandon for her role in Dead Man Walking but the competition in the Best Actress category was really fierce that year. The other nominations in the category included big names like Meryl Streep for her role in The Bridges of Madison County and Emma Thompson for her role in Sense and Sensibility.
The Broken Flowers actress talked about how she had worked hard for her role in Casino
Sharon Stone appeared on a Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi podcast episode earlier this year and talked about how she had wanted a nomination in the Best Actress actress category because she had worked just as hard for her role as others. She said,
“The point is the actual work that I did and I did the work for five months with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci and James Woods. I did the work, so I am going to be in the category of the work that I did. I’m not in it so that you’ll say, ‘Oh, OK Sharon, you can have it. You can have the statue.’ No. I am in the lane that I drove in.”
Although Sharon Stone did lose the Oscar Award that year to Susan Sarandon, she still ended up winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama that year for her portrayal of Ginger McKenna in Casino.
