2024 already looks to be a massive year for the superhero franchises. One of the most anticipated films of next year will be Deadpool 3 which will see Ryan Reynolds back as the foul-mouthed cracking Wade Wilson aka Deadpool. The other exciting prospect that fans are eager to see, is the reunion of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine with Reynolds’ Deadpool which is sure to be a cracking one.
But the two charismatic characters did not have a great outing in their first appearance together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Apart from the film being criticized for poor execution, Reynolds’ introduction and treatment as Deadpool also received severe backlash which the talented actor had to work very hard to undo in his standalone films. Liev Schreiber, who played the chilling Victor Creed aka Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, also praised The Proposal star’s efforts to resurrect his character favorably.
Ryan Reynolds Received Props From Liev Schreiber For Saving His Character Deadpool
One of the main reasons for the lukewarm response of 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, was the radical changes made to Ryan Reynolds’ character Deadpool who was first introduced in this film. While Reynolds, like his character in the comics, gave a pitch-perfect performance as the politically incorrect loud-talking mercenary, it was the drastic shift in his persona in the climax that did not cut it with audiences.
In the film, Wade Wilson is supposedly killed by Sabretooth before William Stryker transforms him into the mute and obedient Weapon XI, resulting in a major departure from the source material. Reynolds ultimately redeemed the character through the standalone Deadpool films. Sabretooth actor Liev Schreiber who also appeared in the 2009 Wolverine origin film, spoke to GQ about Deadpool and expressed his relief on seeing Reynolds’ makeup for the debacle of his character.
“I mean Ryan did such a great job with that transition [to the Deadpool movies], ’cause I felt like it was, in many ways, so antithetical to who that character was in Origins. But Im glad that Ryan was able to correct that mistake.”
Interestingly, according to unconfirmed reports coming in, Schreiber could allegedly reprise his role as Victor Creed/Sabretooth in a small cameo in Deadpool 3. If this materializes, it will be a return to the character for the actor 15 years after last playing the role in X-Men: Origins: Wolverine.
The Deadpool Films And Ryan Reynolds Have A Dubious Relationship With The Writers Strike
It seems that Ryan Reynolds and his character Deadpool have an uncanny connection with the Writers Guild of America. After the first film became a challenging proposition owing to the Writers Strike in 2008, the actor is once again caught in between while working on Deadpool 3. The star is now once again forced to rework the character following the guidelines that have been laid out at the 2023 Writers Strike.
Reynolds, who is also credited as a writer and producer in the film, will not possess the freedom to use his famous impromptu skills to modify the existing script owing to a new WGA guideline that states that producers cannot indulge in “writer-like practices” while the strike is going on, to show solidarity with the community. Despite Reynolds being known to traverse from the beaten path many times, he will have to adhere to the rules this time to avoid going against the norms.
