In a Cruel Twist of Fate, a World of Warcraft Hardcore Player Feigns Death for too Long and then Dies Because of It

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is not the main attraction of games, but it still yields many stories that involve its dedicated players. One of them, who was so committed to his journey and being a specialist in the use of Feign Death, ended up in a unique scenario, using the old tactic which ended up with a not-so-profitable fate.

This death simulation mechanic had already been resolved for a long time, the same cannot be said about World of Warcraft Classic, where even the most experienced players are caught off guard and curious stories unfold at all times in the setting of the iconic MMORPG.

The Abuse Of Feign Death Took A Toll On A Hardcore World of Warcraft Player

Recently, the classic version of World of Warcraft got a hardcore mode that on the surface would mean more player characters dying. It would also mean that lasting progress would be lost in the blink of an eye, as well as addicts leveling up at breakneck speeds.

But the creativity that this world brings creates different situations every day, and to explain the adventure this time it is necessary to contextualize. One of the main elements of these hardcore modes is the permanent death of the character and combined with MMOs like World of Warcraft, that means the loss of hundreds of hours dedicated to the game being reset in the snap of a finger.

Another vital part of this episode is one of the basic World of Warcraft spells, guaranteed by the Hunter class, Feign Death, which makes the controlled character escape the enemy’s attention by voluntarily fainting to later wake up and attack again.

This spell can be performed for up to 6 minutes, but is usually cast for a short time, just enough to regain combat advantage. However, timing out has a little-known consequence, that still exists in the classic version.

Due to the desperation of this consequence in the base version, and that few reach the spell’s time limit, the effects are unknown to many, including hardcore player Walldewd. This particular gamer who was exploring the world of World of Warcraft Classic, went to the Stormwind Auction House, after a successful hunt, where they decided to have a cup of tea for some reason.

This player then had their character Feign Death, while the kettle was on the stove. But at the point the drink was ready, they discovered their level 31 hunter with many hours of progress had already kicked the bucket, cause of death, too much spell time.

It wasn’t an impressive battle or a dramatic moment, but a trivia and costly experiment with the game. According to Walldewd himself:

“Feigned in front of auction house in Stormwind and went to make tea. Came back to this. Idk man this doesn’t feel right.”, His clan in the game also opined after hearing the story: “If that ain’t a RIPbozo idk what is.” “How does it make sense to die while feigning death” “You hold your breath for six minutes”.

The latter is indeed right as the Hunter canonically holds his breath while Feigning Death. This was happening before the release of World of Warcraft, but was quickly noticed and corrected in 2007, just before the Burning Crusade expansion.

So in vanilla WoW, you can Feign Death all you want and your character is still intact. What is certain is that the story spread through the community, other players were surprised this still happened, and discussed whether it is right this mechanic continues to work.

This joins a collection of funny character deaths in World of Warcraft, even after so long, entertaining players and the entire gaming community.
