Eddie Murphy is known for being an effortless comedy star. Starting his journey at the young age of 19, the star became a blockbuster star. Known for his quick wit, the actor went on to become a part of numerous successful movies.
However, the star lies forgotten and hasn’t been seen on the big screen for a while. Despite being a charismatic and dynamic performer, the Beverley Hills Cop has not been cast in a major project due to his choice of movies in the former years.
Reasons Why Hollywood Won’t Cast Eddie Murphy
Everything was going well for The Nutty Professor star in the 1990s up until the early 2000s. But then Eddie Murphy brought about The Adventures of Pluto Nash, and his comedy career came crashing down. Made after nearly a laborious two decades with about $100M investment, the movie became a super flop as it made a mere $7.1M at the box office.
So when the higher-ups realized that Murphy wasn’t the golden star anymore, they weren’t too pleased about it. The Nutty Professor actor, meanwhile, didn’t seem to mind then, as he made fun of his movie in an interview, saying,
“In my house, we have Pluto Nash week. We celebrate Pluto Nash.”
While his epic movie flop was one of the reasons behind his career crash, another reason could be Eddie Murphy’s ‘pickiness’ in choosing movies itself. The reason behind this is that the actor didn’t want to do just any movie that was tossed at him and that he also needed to make sure the script was ‘just right’ before accepting it.
On The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2013, when asked about the probability of the making and him getting cast in the movie Beverly Hills Cop 4, Murphy said rather wittily,
“This will be perfect. Because I don’t wanna do anything else that sucks ever again … I don’t wanna suck no more.”
The movie The Adventures of Pluto Nash was rated only 4% on Rotten Tomatoes and was even given the title of ‘most epic movie flop’ by CBS News.
Eddie Murphy’s Upcoming Movie
After his big career crash in the 2010s, Eddie Murphy regained his edge in Hollywood as he started getting cast again in superhit movies like Dolemite is My Name, which was released in the year 2019.
While his next upcoming movie, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley is on the horizon, Murphy is also reported to star in a new Pink Panther reboot for the role of Inspector Clouseau. This movie will be directed by Sonic the Hedgehog franchise director Jeff Fowler, with the movie’s script written by Bad Boys for Life scriptwriter, Chris Bremner.
Rumors have it that this version of Pink Panther will be a CGI hybrid movie, with its plot revolving around the animated Pink Panther being freed from an animated jail by his real-life crew for pulling off a new heist.
However, the only question that fans seem to have about both these movies is just one – will Eddie Murphy manage to pull these movies off once again or will his career face another big crash? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see as this is something that only time can tell!
