Neither Naruto Nor One Piece, Attack on Titan Creator Hajime Isayama Praised Another Legendary Anime for a Flawless Plot

Manga writers often read other creator’s work to adapt their work and learn from it. But there are very rare cases, where a mangaka praises another mangaka for their work. One such incident occurred during an interview with Comic Natalie, where Manga creators of two of the biggest anime in the world, Hajime Isayama (Attack on Titan) and Yukimura Makoto (Vinland Saga) talked to each other and shared their experiences.

Hajime Isayama Loved The Composition of Vinland Saga

Manga writer Isayama while talking to Comic Natalie explained how he had to put himself in Einar’s shoes to understand the past of Thorfinn. He said:

“Thorfinn’s past cannot be recognized when reading from the Slave/Farm Arc, so I started reading by putting myself in Einar’s shoes. Of course, I later read it from the beginning, but after reading it, I was surprised at how wonderful the composition was. The whole story is like a perfect three-act structure, and I realized that I was reading a play with an amazing degree of excellence. You can’t do this unless you’re smart and study hard.”

“Despite being set in the Viking Age, VINLAND SAGA is portrayed in a very modern way. They fight thinking that they will go to Valhalla after they die. Through Thorfinn’s perspective as a victim, readers living in this modern age can easily connect with the period. The pages convey the terror of the men of the past, who were much closer to animals, than men of today.”

According to Isayama, although the plot is that of the Viking era, the portrayal of the characters is very modern helping readers connect with the protagonist which is very difficult for a manga writer to develop.
