Anne Hathaway starred alongside an ensemble female cast, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, and many more in the 2018 film Ocean’s 8. The spin-off to Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy follows a group of women following the lead of Debbie Ocean to execute a heist at the annual Met Gala. It was a box office hit, grossing $297 million, and gained positive reviews from critics.
The cast of the film was also praised for their performance, especially Hathaway, with reports calling her the “Jewel of Ocean’s 8.” And the actress explained that she also felt something similar during an interview with Elle.
Anne Hathaway Shared Her Experience Starring in Ocean’s 8
Anne Hathaway has been in the film industry for over two decades and has starred in multiple blockbusters throughout her career. The actress even bagged an Oscar for her performance in the 2013 period musical Les Misérables. However, she never got the feeling that she did while working on her 2018 film Ocean’s 8.
During an interview with Elle, the actress shared that working alongside an all-female cast was not something she was used to. “I remember looking around going, Wait, why have I never been here before?” she shared. It led her to question why she has not done more movies like Ocean’s 8, which featured an all-female cast. She further shared,
“And then I remember having a distinct feeling: Oh, this is what it’s like to be a man in Hollywood. Wherever they go, they’re in a pack; there’s so much ease in this.”
She shared that having “this many women on set” gave her a sense of comfort and said that she wanted to continue doing so. “And I just wanted more of it,” Hathaway shared before adding that she had since decided to work with more women and create opportunities that would allow them to work together.
Anne Hathaway Appreciates Her Co-Stars’ Support
Ocean’s 8 marked Anne Hathaway’s comeback to the big screen after Colossal, which was released in 2016. It was also her first film after giving birth to her son Jonathan in 2016. The actress has opened up about feeling nervous as she joined the cast of Gary Ross’ 2018 heist comedy film.
“After I had my son, the weight was really slow to come off, and I was a different size than I normally am,” she shared during an interview. However, the cast and the filmmaker always supported her. “That’s great. We have eight women in this movie and need to have as many body types as we can,” she recalled Ross’ words.
She also shared that the compliments from her co-stars, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Rihanna, about her post-baby body also helped to boost her confidence. “Sandy Bullock just looks up and says, “Looking good, mama.” Ooh, that made me feel amazing,” The Princess Diaries star shared.
Although she did not know some of the cast members before working on the movie, Hathaway said that they all grew very close soon. She called working with the cast a “love fest” and stated that they all loved each other and had a special relationship.
