Jeremy Renner, who’s famous for his role as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was reportedly fed up with playing the character in the first team-up spectacle, The Avengers (2012.)
According to a 2016 coverage from Radio Times, Jeremy Renner attended a film and comic con event in London where he elaborated on his pain working in the $1.5 billion film as a mindless minion for the most part.
We all saw how his character’s mind was manipulated into doing what Tom Hiddleston’s Loki wanted. During the Q&A at the event, Renner opened up that he urged the studios to have his character killed off and he had a solid idea for that too.
Jeremy Renner Requested Marvel To Kill Off Clint Barton
After four years, Renner was able to put his feelings out in the open as he said during the event that he never got to tell anybody about that before. Keeping a mindless persona for a major part of the film, Renner felt that there was enough opportunity to put an end to Barton’s misery.
Renner said in the Q&A event in London, (via Radio Times) –
“I just had a heart attack in every scene. I’d just be walking with… Scarlett Johansson, and just like be ugh,” (clutching his chest theatrically.) “And they said, ‘What are you doing man?’ I’m giving you an option; if you just want to kick me out of this movie, just you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy’s gonna be having a heart attack.”
Barton’s story arc in The Avengers was quite frustrating for Jeremy Renner as he noted that he was getting to know the character better and suddenly became “Loki’s minion.”
Jeremy Renner On Clint Barton’s Dream Ending
Subtly pointing to the culmination of Marvel’s decade-long buildup in Avengers: Infinity War, Renner said that he looked to continue Clint Barton’s story as he wanted to explore him more before the tentpole presented some surprising closures.
“I don’t really want him to die now. I really got to explore him a lot, and I can’t wait to explore him more. And there’s some really cool ideas coming up. Really cool ideas. Great deaths! Amazing ways to die,” he further said (via Radio Times.)
Maybe not a dream ending, but he got to explore more of Clint Barton in the Disney+ series, Hawkeye, which had Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop.
The Avengers is streaming on Disney+.
