On February 18 this year, Beverly Hills hosted the 75th Directors Guild Awards and made a rather strange choice for the host of the mega event. Not only did the host pass sharp jokes on some of the most talented people in the industry, his remarks on Tom Cruise stood out, big time!
While die-hard fans of Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise may not want to believe he isn’t as tall, the event host took a risk by taking a swing at his height, but that wasn’t all.
Variety put out a piece containing all the details of his remarks on Cruise as he picked on the actor in the most bizarre ways. Other artists he made fun of were Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert of Everything Everywhere All at Once, Austin Butler of Elvis, and Steven Spielberg.
‘You’re 60. Calm Down,’ Said Jim Carrey’s Collaborator
Tom Cruise holds a lot of leverage in the film business, but that didn’t stop Jim Carrey’s Fun with Dick and Jane (2005) co-writer to take his antics up a notch.
Cruise, 61, has been highly confident about his persona during filming and while on talk shows, but the event host, as per Variety, poked Cruise as if he had some personal agenda.
“He rides a motorcycle off a cliff and BASE jumps and we’re all like, ‘Tom’s fine!’ Tom is not fine. Someone needs to explain to him something called CGI. You’re 60. Calm down,” said the host about his latest cliff stunt.
He also recalled an incident from Tom Cruise’s early days when he made headlines for his involvement in Scientology.
The $204M Film Co-writer Insulted Tom Cruise’s Height
The 75th DGA event host Judd Apatow came with a loaded speech barrel. Making fun of the visuals in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, Apatow said –
“The special effects in ‘Maverick’ were so top-notch, I couldn’t even see the stack of phone books Tom Cruise sat on to reach the flight controls.”
They even rotated the cameras toward Joseph Kosinski who didn’t appear to be pleased with Apatow’s insensitive remarks. Calling out his [Cruise] Oprah Winfrey’s couch incident, Apatow seemed to make his remarks sound unanimous.
“Remember when Tom Cruise jumped up and down on the couch and we all thought, ‘What a lunatic!’” Apatow said.
Despite the star power that Cruise wields in Hollywood, he likes to steer clear from commenting on such insults. He also has a busy schedule to be noticing incidents like these.
Up next, Tom Cruise will be seen pushing the stakes even further with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, set for June 28, 2024.
