With the popularity of the show popping off with rapid intensity, many netizens were able to find some old clips of Beef star David Choe‘s podcast interview with adult film star Asa Akira. What shocked the public as it went viral was the story that Choe allegedly fabricated, in which he sexually assaulted a female who was giving him a massage. After the backlash, his friends and executive producers Ali Wong and Steven Yeun were told to give public statements about their co-star’s actions. which they managed to avoid until recently.

In their recent statements given to the public through Vanity Fair, both stars stated how deeply apologetic they were due to their friend’s actions. They again clarified that the story of Choe’s assault was a fabricated tale that the star came up with and that he was sorry for any discomfort that it may have caused the public. They also stated that he would receive appropriate medical help from professionals. In their statement, they said:

“The story David Choe fabricated nine years ago is undeniably hurtful and extremely disturbing. We do not condone this story in any way, and we understand why this has been so upsetting and triggering. We’re aware David has apologized in the past for making up this horrific story, and we’ve seen him put in the work to get the mental health support he needed over the last decade to better himself and learn from his mistakes.”

Choe said that he made the whole story up just so he could challenge his audience, which he later realized was done in poor taste.

What sets Beef apart from the rest of the shows on the internet is the perfect balance that it manages to achieve in relation to parts of heartbreak and comedy. The narrative is set on how Wong and Yeun’s character tries to take revenge on each other due to a road-rage accident between the two, which spirals down into a very serious and borderline insane obsession to become victorious, all the while managing to make the audience hold their stomach in laughter.
