However, according to inside sources in Hollywood, the passing on of the baton does not seem to be apparent. With the older actors still churning out films and reboots of their sequels for a younger audience, the industry looks to have failed to groom the next set of successors.
Where Are Hollywood’s Next Generation Of Superstars?
In a fickle entertainment industry like Hollywood, remaining relevant and relatable over many decades is a massive feat. Celebrities like Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and John Travolta are some actors who have succeeded in creating an aura of superstardom with their blockbuster films that are still evergreen today. The veteran actors are still bringing their A-game by making movies and sequels to their earlier cult films.
While Harrison Ford was seen in the final installment of his famous Indiana Jones franchise which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Sylvester Stallone is gearing up for a Cliffhanger reboot. And John Travolta will be seen in a romantic comedy titled That’s Amore. With all these stars well into their 60s and 70s and attempting to cater to the modern generation, there are concerning questions arising about the dearth of the next generation of actors who will take over from their predecessors. Speaking of these concerns, a Hollywood insider said,
“Over the last 10 years, we’ve done a really sh**ty job of creating a new generation of movie stars,”
Another industry insider elaborated on the reasons for this discrepancy and said that while the earlier generation of superstars gained fame mainly through the big screen that gave them their God-like status, modern-day actors were more accessible to the audiences through streaming along with their personal lives being open for public scrutiny thanks to social media. Hence, they were unable to maintain the aura that is associated with being a movie star.
Sylvester Stallone’s Take On Cliffhanger Reboot
While expressing enthusiasm about rebooting his hugely successful film Cliffhanger, Sylvester Stallone was also honest and realistic about the relevance of these films in today’s era. While he believed that a film like Cliffhanger was still topical for today’s time due to its technical prowess and action that can still relate to all audiences, the Rocky star felt that the iconic Oscar-winning movie, The Godfather starring Al Pacino and Marlon Brando, may not hold up as well for the modern aesthetic either through performances or as a script. To quote the actor,
“Like, if you were to make the Godfather today it wouldn’t work. You couldn’t – those actors don’t exist. I mean, it’s a different style. Now Cliffhanger, like Demolition Man, holds up, so I’m looking forward to it.”
When asked about the kind of stunts that will be incorporated into the Cliffhanger sequel, Stallone confessed in a light-hearted vein that he was relieved the script did not have too many death-defying segments. He went on to praise the story and the screenplay and promised a thrilling entertainment fest for the audiences.
