Ezra Miller’s The Flash is one of the highly anticipated superhero movies of the year, and with this movie, Zack Snyder’s DCU would be rebooted. The movie shows immense potential but, it has been delayed because of some controversial incidents that Ezra Miller has found themself in the past year.
Many renowned names in the industry consider them to be a problematic actor because of the values and opinions they hold. And in a recent interview, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein whose Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves did immensely well at the SXSW film festival did not have good things to say about the actor as well.
What Did the Directors Say About Ezra Miller?
During an exclusive interview with Variety, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein talked about how they were hired to make Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves; and how they were associated with writing and directing The Flash but they left the DC film, handing over their work to Andy Muschietti, the new director of the film.
Daley stated that in their version of the speedster film, they wanted to get rid of “this mounting sense of fatigue” of the superhero stereotype films among audiences, and they did not want to make the character imperfect when they had all the resources to be labeled as ‘perfect.’
“We pitched this idea of a ground-level superhero where it isn’t entirely end-of-the-world stakes. He’s just learning his powers and is also somewhat dysfunctional with his life. The more imperfect we can make a superhero, the better, because that’s the inherent challenge: How do you give imperfection to someone that is, you know, physically perfect?”
John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein stated that they met Ezra Miller once for dinner before they started on the script, and called the actor “intense” and “bright.” However, they soon realized that both parties had different ideas, and reportedly, the actor created a rival version of the script.
“They were intense and very bright,” Goldstein says of the actor. “Later, it became clear that they didn’t want to quite do the same thing as we did.”
“It was a number of creative differences that caused us at a certain point to decide that it was time to go,” says Daley. And Goldstein added, “If we feel like the powers-that-be aren’t excited about making the same movie as we are, we’re not going to win that battle. And so it’s better to cut your losses and get out of there.”
The directors stated that they handed over their work to Andy Muschietti and Christina Hodson and their revised work was given the green light. Moreover, they are happy with what they have done with the movie and how everything turned out in the end.
“They took what we had started and really ran with it and made it a very fun and emotional movie. We’re really happy with how it all turned out.”
It would be interesting how The Flash would be because there have been several instances where netizens were trying to boycott the movie because of Ezra Miller’s controversial incidents and actions in the past.
What did John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein Say about Ezra Miller?
In the same interview, the directors were asked about Ezra Miller’s actions, and they chose their words very carefully. They said how making a film under such circumstances is difficult and how delighted they must have been when they watched the final product.
“All I can say is, having been through the trying process of making a massive film in the best of circumstances, I was very empathetic toward the people that put a loooot of time and then themselves in making the film, like Andy and Christina,” Daley says. “I can only imagine how fraught that must have been for them. But I’m so glad that the finished product is a super fun movie.” He laughs nervously. “Is that diplomatic?”
Goldstein jumps in. “Obviously, you don’t want any headwinds when you’re trying to put a giant, expensive movie out in the world,” he says. “And hopefully, the quality of the film will come through, and people will embrace it.”
Due to Ezra Miller’s controversial actions and erratic behavior in public, as a result, many people believed that Warner Bros would cancel the film, but the actor has acknowledged their actions and has worked on their behavior ever since.
