Were Insomniac Games Lying When They Claimed Ratchet and Clank Could Only be Played on a PS5’s SSD?

If you are a PlayStation 5 owner, or at the very least a Sony observer, you might recall insistence from developer Insomniac Games, that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart could only be played on the PlayStation 5. One of the major selling points for the console was that it would eliminate loading screens forever, and it was all thanks to a state-of-the-art solid state drive. While Insomniac Games was not the only developer to make such promises, Ratchet and Clank was considered impossible, outside of the newest Sony system. There seemed to be many indications the solid-state drive was so advanced, similarly outfitted PC’s would not be viable.

Now, it appears the guarantee Insomniac Games made concerning Ratchet and Clank may have stretched the truth. Although the game does perform at an optimal quality on the PlayStation 5 system, is is not the only thing that can run the AAA title. It appears after tests from gamers over the past few days, there are similar solid-state drives that can in fact run the game.

How Gamers Believe Insomniac Games Falsely Advertised Ratchet and Clank For PlayStation 5

Recent tests show Ratchet & Clank can be played on systems other than the PS5.

Twitter users, @RinoTheBouncer and @PeterOvo5, took to social media, to spread the truth about what they believe is an outright lie from Insomniac Games. @PeterOvo5 posted two pictures and a video, showing contradictory information between Insomniac Games’ statements and actual test runs. The post says the following:

“The lie was that Ratchet & Clank Rift apart was only possible because of the PlayStation 5 SSD.

-It runs on all SSDs

– It runs on some HDDs

Even if Insomniac said “previous generations” they hyped it only being possible because of the PS5 SSD.”

In the post made by @RinoTheBouncer, there is an attached video comparing three different playthroughs of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. It shows max settings 4K DLSS, quality, PlayStation 5 performance RT mode, and minimum settings native 720P. Although the minimum settings preview may not run as smoothly compared to the other two, it is clear various solid state drives can run the title.

Even if Sony and Insomniac Games were pushing hard for Ratchet and Clank to only be playable on the PlayStation 5, this does not justify a campaign based in falsity. If the two companies had actual malice and intended to improperly influence consumers with dishonest information, then they should be held accountable for such actions.

However, despite how it may seem, there has been some debate over whether what Insomniac Games actually said was untruthful. Some have read the statement “only made possible with PlayStation 5’s solid state drive” as meaning it “cannot be played on anything else.” While others have read it to mean “older generations could not run Ratchet and Clank, but new solid-state drives can.” Fans can only speculate as to the true meaning of the statements made by Insomniac Games, but it is certainly never a good idea to jump to conclusions before all sides have had a chance to address the issue.

What do you think of the Ratchet and Clank solid-state drive debate? Was Insomniac Games truly lying or have the statements just been misunderstood? Leave a comment and let us know what you think of these ongoing questions.
