When it comes to the superhero genre, Marvel Studios has consistently delivered awe-inspiring characters and performances. And living up to the expectations of the fans, the studio provided its fans with a compelling portrayal of Kang the Conquerer in the MCU series Loki. Impressed by the response from the viewers, the team decided to restructure the entire MCU Phase 6 around the formidable Marvel Comics villain. However, is that really a wise choice?
For one, Jonathan Majors, portraying the role of Kang the Conqueror is facing legal troubles owing to his arrest on the charges of strangulation, assault, and harassment following a dispute with his alleged girlfriend. And two, some fans believe that MCU has not been successful in showcasing the best part of the character yet.
Fans criticize MCU’s portrayal of Kang as a ‘terrifying’ villain
There’s no doubt that Jonathan Majors’ performance as Kang the Conqueror has had a profound impact on Marvel’s Phase 6 plans. However, a few fans feel that in Kang’s recent appearance in Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the makers could not do justice to the character. A few fans wrote on Twitter,
And that’s not it. Apart from the issues pointed out by fans regarding the portrayal of Kang the Conqueror, there is one other hurdle that the makers are facing. And this hurdle might become the reason why MCU might regret relying on one character to this extent.
Does Marvel regret relying so much on one character?
Jonathan Majors is grappling with some serious legal issues at the moment. And there is no doubt that this development has cast a black cloud of doubt on his future in the MCU. This has further raised questions about whether he will continue his role as Kang – the character that is anticipated to be the next significant antagonist after Thanos.
And since the makers had decided to restructure the entire phase 6 around the supervillain, it’s possible that the uncertainty surrounding Jonathan’s involvement in MCU moving ahead has become a serious concern. While talking about the situation, MCU book author Joanna Robinson said on the Ringer’s Big Picture podcast,
“I was told by someone who works for Marvel it was not the plan to make Kang the center of everything until they saw the dailies from Quantumania and after his performance in Loki, which was so strong they were like, ‘This is it. This is our way forward. We’ve lost our varsity hero team, but let’s set up around this guy Kang and this performer that so many people are reacting to.”

Since this is the first time that Marvel has ever relied on one character for an entire phase, it would not be surprising if the makers regret their decision owing to Jonathan Majors’ current circumstances.
