It’s a blockbuster weekend at the box office with the release of the highly anticipated The Flash. Apart from garnering immense hype for its narrative which is based on the Flashpoint Paradox from DC Comics, the film has also been in the limelight for controversial reasons too. With the protagonist Ezra Miller’s private life and conduct taking center stage, The Flash and the actor have been a talking point over many months.
The controversies surrounding the film are still ongoing post its release as well. Director Andy Muschietti and his sister, producer Barbara Muschietti have now come out in the open to express their displeasure on the leak of a pivotal scene in the film which involved Hollywood A-lister and Oscar winner Nicolas Cage.
The Muschiettis Speak About About Nicolas Cage’s Superman Leak
One of the special features in superhero films over the years has been the cameos and crossovers by other comic book characters. The Flash directed by Andy Muschietti had one of the most iconic cameos in DC history involving Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage as Superman. Cage, as is well known, was to have played the celebrated DC hero in Tim Burton’s Superman Lives but the film did not materialize.
Cage’s cameo which was to be a high point in The Flash, was unfortunately leaked many months ago leading to speculation that Andy and Barbara Muschietti had intentionally planned to reveal this information before the release of the film. The siblings squashed these rumors in no uncertain terms and also expressed their displeasure on the unintended leak saying that they wanted it to be a surprise. Barbara Muschietti stated, albeit in a lighthearted vein,
“I’ll tell you, that leak hurt. We were not happy. And when all of this over, I’ll name names”
Her brother, director Andy Muschietti also confessed that while the leaked information about Nicolas Cage’s Superman was very unfortunate, audiences will still be in for big surprises and exciting moments in The Flash.
Why Happened to Superman Lives With Nicolas Cage?
Apart from playing a Marvel superhero, Nicolas Cage was almost cast as DC’s most iconic superhero, Superman, in Tim Burton’s Superman Lives. The film which was to hit the screens in the 90s, unfortunately did not happen. The National Treasure actor stated that he wasn’t fully aware of why the project was shelved except for the fact that the choice of director was a toss-up between Tim Burton and Finnish director Renny Harlin. Nicolas Cage felt that,
“I liked Renny but I thought if I’m going to do this, it’s such a bullseye to hit. I said this has to be Tim Burton. I called Tim and said, ‘Would you do this?” Tim didn’t cast me, I cast Tim, and Tim said yes”
The actor said that he really enjoyed the character they were building which was based on Superman with “samurai black long hair”. This potentially exciting collaboration though remained only on paper with Tim Burton moving on to direct Batman with Michael Keaton.
