“We were just writing the movie almost in real time”: Taika Waititi’s Chaotic Direction Left Screenwriter Crazy as Director Rumored to Return for Thor 5 Despite Backlash

Taika Waititi’s Chaotic Direction Left Screenwriter Crazy as Director Rumored to Return for Thor 5 Despite Backlash

The last two Thor movies, Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) were created by director Taika Waititi. Although the director gave his best, many fans feel like he doesn’t know what to do with the character.

Thor: Love and Thunder‘s screenwriter, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, once explained Waititi’s approach while creating the movie. The writer followed Waititi around with a laptop and “wrote the film as they filmed it.” While it may seem like a quirky approach, it surely didn’t work as the movie was not a huge hit among the fans.

Thor: Love and Thunder‘s screenwriter said creating the movie was an “out-of-body experience

Fans often complain that director Taika Waititi‘s Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) feels like a rehashed version of 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. While there were some strange elements, the film’s screenwriter, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, highlighted that there were some good things about it too,

“There’s a bit that is not in the film, but it was Hemsworth and Pratt walking through this trench, and I just remember it was such an out-of-body experience, as I’m like walking behind Taika, Chris and Chris with a laptop in this literal trench that they built that looks like you’re in a planet. And I’m just like, ‘What the f***? How did I get here?’ It was very bizarre.”

The only part that was exciting for Robinson was not included in the movie. Thor: Love and Thunder was the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2022, making $760 million at the global box office.

Robinson further revealed that Waititi followed a quirky method to shoot the film. Robinson recalled that she wrote the film as Waititi filmed the movie,

“I would stand next to him, and it would just be shouting things. I was never shouting. I would always pitch to Taika and then Taika would choose what he liked. But I had a lot of time where I had a mini monitor next to Taika, and we were just writing the movie almost in real time as they were shooting it. So there were all different kinds of versions of putting together this film. Taika’s brain just moves at a pace that should not be allowed. It’s like, the way that he kind of thinks or looks at things and like his capacity to kind of play, but also have total control is really astounding.”

There is no doubt that Waititi is a talented director, however, fans have complained that he can’t seem to bring out Thor’s full potential. Not just Thor, but Gorr the God Butcher was also butchered in the movie.
