If there’s one thing Tobey Maguire cherishes more than his Spider-Man PJs, it’s keeping his personal life far away from the tumult of the limelight.
The actor and film producer is an extremely confidential man and has never been thrilled about his romantic relationships turning into publicized fodder for the unyielding appetite of media outlets. His penchant for privacy even ended up leading to albeit an amicable, yet crushing split with his now ex-wife Jennifer Meyer after nine years of marriage. Safe to say he’s not the most extroverted guy.
Well, if he could choose a divorce over the prospect of sacrificing his privacy, then he could surely throw a lie or two about his dating history to keep his personal and professional lives separate. And that is exactly what Maguire did when he was asked about his history with Kirsten Dunst.
Tobey Maguire Lied About Being “Friends” With Kirsten Dunst
Long back when he’d appeared on The Howard Stern Show during the time Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man became a box office hit, Tobey Maguire was toppled with questions about his relationship with his co-star, Kirsten Dunst.
While the two had sparked up a romance on the set of the 2002 film, they’d both made it a point to keep it a secret. So when Stern prodded him to reveal sizzling details about his s*x life with Dunst from the time they were together, the 47-year-old star did the next best thing to keep the secret intact – he simply lied about him having nothing more than a friendship with his co-star.
“I’m gonna go ahead and say that we were friends.”
Even the host didn’t believe the Babylon star for a single second when he said that. And who would? Maguire and Dunst might’ve been clandestine enough to not come to the director’s immediate attention, but the pair dated for more than a year before they broke up. So eventually, everyone came to know how Peter Parker and MJ’s chemistry wasn’t just limited to the screens.
A Brief Glimpse Into Tobey Maguire And Kirsten Dunst’s Relationship
Maguire met the award-winning actress on the set of Spider-Man back in 2001 when the former was portraying the superhero on screens with Dunst playing the girl next door who Spider-Man falls for. Quite literally. But the ex-couple kept quiet about their feelings for each other till the very end of their relationship. Although that didn’t stop them from gushing about each other every now and then.
In an interview with EW, the Bring It On star admitted she wanted to work with Raimi on Spider-Man “even more” when she found out Maguire’s name had been attached to the project. Even Maguire couldn’t hold himself back from calling Dunst “very attractive” and “the best actress” he’d had the pleasure to work with at that time.
After about a year of going out though, The Great Gatsby actor’s relationship with Dunst had fizzled out as the two were believed to have ended things before the 2004 sequel of Spider-Man. But they definitely had a good run and even turned out to be friends during the second and the third film, and as the saying goes, ‘all’s well that ends well.’
