Before Christian Bale and Matt Damon shined in the 2019 movie Ford v Ferrari, Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt had already been attached to the role. With James Mangold helming as the director of the movie, Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski was attached as the director of the movie.

Joseph Kosinski Almost Made Ford v Ferrari With Tom Cruise And Brad Pitt

Before Matt Damon and Christian Bale were cast in the role of Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles respectively, the project had very different people attached to it. Recalling the earlier talks and details, director Joseph Kosinski stated how the project was originally called Go Like Hell.

In an interview with Collider, the director opened up about how he had envisioned the movie long before it was released as Ford v Ferrari. The director recalled that in his plans, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt had been cast in the role of Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles respectively. He further stated that the film eventually fell apart since they were not able to meet the budgetary requirements.

“I wouldn’t say we got close to production, but I got to the point where I had Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt at a table read, reading the script together. But we couldn’t get the budget to the number it had to be at, and it was the right number. So that was the one for me that got away. But I was thrilled to see that they ended up making an amazing version of it,”

After James Mangold took over as director and cast Christian Bale and Matt Damon in the role, Ford v Ferrari went on to win two Oscars. Joseph Kosinski had nothing but praise for how the film was made since he stated that this was exactly how he would make the film if he had the chance.

After the movie was released, Kosinski and Cruise had the time of their lives when they watched it together. The Top Gun: Maverick director claimed that this was exactly how he was going to make the movie if he had the chance.

“The script was the same, and I think [Mangold’s] approach was generally how I was going to do it, which was real cars, real racing — obviously, making it with Tom, that’s the only way that it would be made. In some ways, what we did for ‘Top Gun,’ we were going to do for car racing with mounted cameras and all that”

He further continued,

“I thought [Mangold] did an excellent version and I thought Christian Bale and Matt Damon nailed the characters, so that was a case where you go in going, ‘God, I hope this is good because I love the story so much.’ I actually saw it with Tom and we were both thrilled when we saw it. It’s a weird thing to see someone make a movie of something that you had kind of got close to making, but they did an amazing job with it.”

Joseph Kosinski later went on to direct Top Gun: Maverick with Tom Cruise and the movie was hailed essentially as the life-saver of theaters. As for Ford v Ferrari, the movie received two Oscars.

Ford v Ferrari is available to stream on Fubo TV.
