Christopher Nolan has awed the audience with his new project, Oppenheimer that created quite a buzz all across the world. He is one of the renowned filmmakers in Hollywood due to his unique pattern of non-linear storytelling that is quite prevalent in his movies with Cillian Murphy-led film being a recent example.
However, his complex plotlines are also an intriguing factor that further makes his project highlight that it’s not just complex to moviegoers but also to the film cast as well. One such project is 2010’s Inception which completely blew our minds away including Leonardo DiCaprio’s.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Thoughts on Christopher Nolan’s Inception
Christopher Nolan was applauded for his direction of 2010’s Inception which twisted the minds of many viewers. The Oscar-nominated movie featured an ensemble cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, and Elliot Page. Given the complexity of the project, even the cast members were often unable to comprehend what exactly were they doing during the filming.
In an interview with Inquirer Entertainment, the Titanic actor shared his experience stating,
“Inception is the same. It is Chris delving into dream psychoanalysis and, at the same time, making a high-octane, surreal film that came from his mind. He wrote the entire thing, and it all made sense to him.”
He continued,
“It didn’t make sense to many of us when we were doing it. We had to do a lot of detective work (laughing) to figure out what the movie was about.”
This turned out to be quite right as the film ended up grossing over $828 million worldwide becoming one of the best films of the 2010s. However, this is not the first film that presented a complex storyline on screen as his 2000’s Memento also brought in the same thrill.
Christopher Nolan’s Memento Was Complex for Lead Actor, Guy Pearce
Nolan’s Memento is a great project that was surprisingly shot in less than a month after the director took time to explore the complexity of the film. He opened up about working on it for three years to make it more layered which was highly reflected in what we have now.
“I’ve got three years to work on this thing and as a viewer you’ve got like two hours to watch it, so it ought to be functioning at some level of greater sophistication than you can absorb in one viewing. I had that opportunity to cheat in that way and make it more complex or more layered or whatever because I had that luxury of time.”
Meanwhile, lead actor, Guy Pearce told GQ that he was unable to get a hold of at it first but he caught on to some elements that resonated with his thoughts.
“The thing was that even though on some level it felt like gobbledegook as I was reading it, because you got the sense that things were all over the place, what I really got and what was really clear was the emotional journey of the character. As the actor that’s the only thing I need to latch onto in order to do my job.”
Memento turned out to be a critical and commercial success earning $40 million worldwide. Since then, it has gained cult status due to its non-linear structures and other elements that amplified the overall ambiance of this project.
