James Gunn’s 10 projects strong new DCU slate renewed interest in the DC franchise. One of the most talked about films in the lineup is Swamp Thing. It’s last in the announced list but potentially the most interesting since the dark origins of the titular character will be explored in his film. However, the character’s darker beginnings are actually courtesy of it not being a part of the mainline DC comics lineup. Instead, that credit goes to the Vertigo label under DC comics for mature audiences. Now, James Gunn has indicated that Swamp Thing might not be the only character adapted into a DCU film/series from Vertigo comics. So could we see Constantine 2 and V for Vendetta 2?
James Gunn In Talks To Adapt More Characters From Vertigo Comics
Recently, James Gunn was questioned on Twitter if he plans to adapt any Vertigo comics character apart from Swamp Thing. The co-CEO of DC Studios replied that he’s in talks about a couple of things regarding characters from Vertigo comics. As per Gunn:
“Swamp Thing was in Vertigo comics, but he was really a DC character. That said, we’re dealing with a couple potential things with Vertigo – comics that I really adored.”
Check out his tweet:
Vertigo comics was founded in 1993 by American editor Karen Berger. The sub-label of DC Comics was created to tell stories that were aimed at adult/ mature audiences. As such, those comics included nudity, profanity, graphic violence, and drug use. In 2020, the label was retired and most of its content was transferred to the new DC Black Label branding.
In its 27 years of history, Vertigo comics has produced several well-known series like Hellblazer, The Sandman, Fables, V for Vendetta, Preacher, Y: The Last Man, and countless more. Now, with Gunn hinting at possibly adapting more characters who got their start in Vertigo comics, is there a possibility we see finally see a Keanu Reeves-led Constantine 2 or the Natalie Portman starring V for Vendetta 2?
Is Constantine 2 And V for Vendetta Sequel A Possibility At DC Studios?
Out of the myriad characters who call Vertigo comics their home, there has been one character who managed to achieve global popularity from its humble beginnings- John Constantine, the occult detective, and warlock. He is now a popular comic character who has received at least two major live-action appearances. Matt Ryan portrayed the magical con man in CW’s Arrowverse while Keanu Reeves played the character in Constantine (2005). In 2022, a sequel to the Reeves-led movie was announced. But as per the latest reports, the film is reportedly not a locked deal.
But with James Gunn hinting at possible talks to adapt more characters from Vertigo comics, could Constantine 2 get finalized soon? After all, Gunn has stated that Chapter 1 of DCU contains more projects that he will announce soon. Also, this has begun speculation about another 2005 comic book movie, V for Vendetta, getting a sequel. However, nothing has been officially announced yet and it’s highly probable that Gunn will wait to see how movies like Superman: Legacy, The Brave and The Bold, and The Authority perform at the box office, before announcing sequels of previous DC films even under the Elseworlds label.
Superman: Legacy will be in theaters on July 11, 2025.
