Glen Powell was among the lead actors in Tom Cruise’s superhit film, Top Gun: Maverick. The film was the sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun. It was an action drama film based on characters of the original film created by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. Joseph Kosinski directed the film, and the plot involved Maverick confronting his past as he trained a group of younger Top Gun graduates for a dangerous mission. All the actors who played the young graduates were given a call sign, however, Powell had to get it changed.
Glen Powell played one of the Top Gun graduates in the superhit film. However, the actor shared he had to change his call sign to Hangman due to a major error.
Glen Powell forced the studio to change his call sign
The young actors who joined forces with Tom Cruise in the action-drama film Top Gun: Maverick were given call signs. It described their personalities and flight traits as they were all fighter pilots. Tom Cruise’s character, Pete Mitchell, was called Maverick as he barely followed any rules. Miles Teller was called Rooster as his father Anthony Edwards’ was called Goose in the first film. Teller’s rival Glen Powell was given the name Hangman. However, initially, the actor had another call sign.
In a conversation with Cinema Blend in San Diego as part of the World Premiere of the film, the cast talked about the intense flight training in the film. While discussing signs, the Powell revealed,
“I got to actually come up with mine. When I first got the job, immediately my original call sign was Slayer. And in the first Navy briefing, they were like, ‘You know, these are Air Force call signs, and these are Navy call signs. There are Air Force call signs like Slayer and Spine Ripper.’ And I was like, ‘Well, I gotta change this! This is an Air Force call sign.’ So I went down to Miramar, stayed with some Naval aviators, and really just riffed on what that was going to be. So that was… (Joseph) Kosinski, (Chris) McQuarrie, and I all came up with ‘Hangman.’”
Glen Powell was very fond of his call sign Hangman.
Top Gun: Maverik Joseph Kosinski shared tough training regime by Tom Cruise
The director Kosinski opened up on the cast’s training for the film. He shared that he knew Tom Cruise would be able to perform plane stunts, as he spent so long hours doing intense training for stunts and is a trained pilot. However, he was worried about the rest of the cast. The director shared with Cinema Blend,
“So, Tom devised this three-month course for all the actors to start with a very simple airplane and work their way up to the Navy jet. They all were able to do all their scenes in the jets for real, which is just phenomenal because you can’t imagine how physically difficult it is to do what they’re doing. They’re flying with real Top Gun pilots. They’re doing the same maneuvers, even more intense maneuvers than they do in training.”
This intense training was essential because Cruise wanted to shoot everything for real. They grossed $1.496 billion worldwide and became the second-highest-grossing film of 2022.
Top Gun: Maverick is available for streaming on Apple TV and Amazon Prime.
