When it comes to superhero movies, DC Studios has managed to create some of the best movies that didn’t leave the fans disappointed. However, there have been a few cases when the studios managed to create something that was a complete disaster. Some of these films may have earned a lot of money but the strong criticism had a huge impact on the studios.
The bad movies help the studios in producing better movies in the future. Many believe that Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern (2011) is DC’s worst disaster, however, the top spot is secured by another movie. Here are the top 5 biggest box office flops in the history of DC:
5. Supergirl (1984)
Released in 1984, director Jeannot Szwarc’s Supergirl was a big disaster. The movie only managed to gross roughly $14.3 million on a budget of $35 million. The disaster wasn’t just the poor earnings, but also the impact that it made on the studios. For a very long time, the creators steered away from making any more female-led superhero movies.
4. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
Directed by Sidney J. Furie, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace was released worldwide in July 1987. Actor Christopher Reeves’ portrayal of Superman was loved by fans all over the world, however, the fourth movie was a flop. The movie managed to only earn about $36 million at the global box office against a budget of $17 million.
3. Batman & Robin (1997)
Believe it or not, Batman & Robin is the lowest-grossing live-action Batman movie to date. It was made on a budget of $125 million and managed to gross about $240 million. However, the audience was not satisfied. Thanks to this movie, DC Studios kept the idea of another Batman movie on hold for a very long time.
2. The Losers (2010)
What if we told you a movie starring Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana, and Idris Elba managed to earn only about $29.9 million? Well, it’s true. Director Sylvain White’s The Losers (2010) was based on the Vertigo comic series, which is an imprint of DC.
Although the movie had comic book-style violence, lots of guns, knives, slo-mo fight scenes, and explosions, it still couldn’t satisfy the fans. On a budget of $25 million, it only made about $29.9 million worldwide.
1. Justice League (2017)
We admit that Justice League (2017) was not a box office disaster as the movie managed to gross over $657 million worldwide on an alleged budget of $300 million. However, that is the budget on paper. The actual budget of the movie, including marketing and a lot of things, is believed to be around $750 million. So the movie is easily DC Studios’ worst box office flop as it resulted in a huge loss.
