Tom Cruise has an insane work ethic. He gives his 100% best for every project no matter what it takes. The Top Gun star also famously does his own stunts and often goes through drastic body transformations to fit into different roles. All this is super taxing for Cruise, who is now 61 years old.
Nevertheless, the actor is relentless. He began training hard six months before filming Edge of Tomorrow. This was a monumental film that he worked in, and it also featured Oppenheimer star Emily Blunt. Cruise’ exceptional work ethic, dedication, and hard work is a great example for every human and is just another reason why he is one of the biggest movie stars in the world.
Tom Cruise Did Intense Training For Edge of Tomorrow
Tom Cruise is one of the actors who tirelessly work hard to build the right muscle and physique to match the appearance of his on-screen characters. In his multi-decade reign as one of the leading action movies superstar, the actor has proved his versatility and the creative skills that have helped him solidify his career.
His level of acting and his nail-biting, deadly, over-the-top stunt work are exceptional, and he put his life at risk to entertain his fans. The Top Gun movie star once shared that he underwent arduous training for his 2014 American science fiction action Edge of Tomorrow, in which he co-starred with the Oppenheimer actress Emily Blunt. He claimed that the metal exosuits costume all the film co-stars wore weighed almost 85 to 120 lbs.
Cruise said,
“I showed up a couple of months early to really RnD the suit. What we did was I put the suit on, and we were working with it and also getting into what the tone is. I know you have to see a progression of my character from where he starts in the exosuit to where he ends. But you also have to find out what is the composition of the suit, the silhouette of the suit.”
The actor continued,
“Literally, I started with stopwatches a couple of months beforehand as we were doing it, and I just started timing them. Then all the guys worked out a system how to get us all in and out of these suits quickly. And I kind of worked with the stunt guys on what the training program would be for the actors and how to gradually get them into the pressure they’re going to be under.”
Tom Cruise has done massive physical transformations in several of his films, and it is one of the sheer elements that capture the audience’s attention when watching him on the silver screen.
Emily Blunt Claims She Cried When She First Wore the Exosuit
Emily Blunt is currently making headlines for her recently released film, Oppenheimer. The actress co-starred with Tom Cruise on their 2014 sci-fi project Edge of Tomorrow and played the role of Sergeant Rita Vrataski, while Cruise plays Major William Cage. Blunt once opened up about her experience wearing the heavy exosuit the film cast wore and claimed she cried for the first time when she dons the outfit.
The actress said,
“We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would’ve been great if we had CGI’d them, but we wanted to do it in a tactile way. When you hear the word ‘tactile,’ you think that sounds nice and cozy. There was nothing cozy about these suits. It was like 85 pounds. It was so heavy. The first time I put it on, I started to cry, and [Cruise] didn’t know what to do.”
She continued,
“I was like, ‘Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot,’ and just started to cry. I said, ‘I’m feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot.’ He just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ‘Come on, stop being such a pussy, ok? I did laugh, and then we got through it, but the training was intense.’”
The Doug Liman-directed Edge of Tomorrow did exceptionally well at the box office, received positive reviews from the audience, and boasts a star-studded cast featuring: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, and Brendan Gleeson, among more.
