Tom Cruise, in a May 1986 interview with The Uncool, revealed that he met with a much greater star than he was at the time at a restaurant when he took advantage of his own star status he achieved with Ridley Scott’s Legend (1985).
Cruise, however, has had a history of neglecting his security team’s boundaries and wandering off in public transportation, he told during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live in February this year.
He said that he often takes the subway to different places that he visits so that he can go to the theater and watch his own films with the audience; though he was spotted once.
Meeting the major star at that restaurant turned out to be special for Cruise as he got to work with him on the $354 million film – Rain Man (1988). Dustin Hoffman, who had been a one-time Oscar winner for his film Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), won again for Rain Man.
Tom Cruise Reflected On Meeting Dustin Hoffman
Later in his conversation with The Uncool, Cruise got to the part where he revealed how he met The Graduate (1967) star Dustin Hoffman. Considering the fact that it was a public place, he shared that he was reluctant at first, but went with it nonetheless.
“I guess meeting Dustin Hoffman was the closest to that,” said Cruise. “Usually, I would never do anything like that. But I was in this Cuban restaurant up on Columbia Avenue with my little sister. All of a sudden she got up to go the bathroom and when she sat down, she had this big smile on her face. She pointed and said, ‘That’s Dustin Hoffman over there.’ He was doing Death of a Salesman, and I had just gotten back from finishing Legend in London.”
Their film, Rain Man, got them together as estranged brothers which followed the journey of Cruise’s Charlie Babbitt who kidnapped Hoffman’s Raymond Babbitt for selfish gains; it won 4 Oscars.
Tom Cruise Often Flouts His Security Detail
Talking about his love for cinema, Cruise told Jimmy Kimmel that he gains a lot more from watching his films with his audience. His security team advises him against that. But he revealed an interesting way of hiding in plain sight.
“Yeah, I do go on Transportation; my security loves that when I do that,” he said sarcastically. “Tube in England. Sometimes I put on my hat and my earphones, and I’ll just go in and get on the tube. I remember one time there was a 14-year-old girl… and she kept staring at me. She took her iPhone and, ‘clicked.’”
Tom Cruise is set to take the stakes even further with next year’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.
The film has an official release date of June 28, 2024. Dead Reckoning Part One is expected to land at Paramount+ for streaming soon.
