During an in-depth conversation with The Guardian reporter Simon Hattenstone, Marvel star Letitia Wright finds herself in a position to clarify what really happened two years ago with her controversial Twitter activity at the height of the pandemic. As the global population became increasingly divisive about the Black Panther actress’s stance on vaccination, the fate of a major franchise and one of its centerpiece movies were left hanging in the balance following just a single video that Wright shared on Twitter.
As Black Panther: Wakanda Forever finds itself amassing a deluge of moviegoers and soars to the highest parameters of critical and commercial acclaim, Letitia Wright is once more brought to the forefront of the speculations as she finally attempts to take back control of the narrative by answering four meticulously-worded questions.
The Controversial Anti-Vax Dilemma of Letitia Wright
While Letitia Wright may have become one of the brightest Marvel stars and the face of the Black Panther IP, speculations still follow her like a shadow as long as Wright manages to avoid her involvement with sharing controversial sentiments on Twitter. In late 2020, the Mangrove actress found herself plagued by rumors, allegations, and outcries levied against her after she shared a video on Twitter containing a pastor spouting messages that condemned vaccination and the LGBTQ+ community. The latter were termed “hell children” who “invaded the church” by the pastor and the video instantly led to a widespread uproar while the Marvel fandom lamented Letitia Wright’s fall from grace.
The next day, Letitia Wright formally apologized on Twitter shortly before deleting her account. The following years were not kind to her as she restarted work on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever film (she had also previously liked a tweet advocating the cancellation of the film, although that may be chalked up to grief in the aftermath of Chadwick Boseman‘s passing who she looked up to like a brother). Her infamous injury further halted production of the film for an extended period and the status of her vaccination threatened her return from the UK to the US to complete the Black Panther 2 shoot.
Letitia Wright Finally Clears the Air on Her Anti-Vax Stance
During her interview with The Guardian, Letitia Wright answers a few questions the world has been seeking the answer to ever since Wright shared the infamous video in 2020. When asked about her tweet and whether she feared being subjected to the wrath of the cancel culture, the Marvel actress claims,
“I feel it’s something I experienced two years ago and I have in a healthy way moved on. And in a healthy way I’ve apologized and deleted my Twitter. I just apologized for any hurt that was caused to anybody.”
She ensures that her post was not an endorsement of transphobic and homophobic views and that “That’s exactly what my apology was. It was saying this is not me, and I apologize. Those are things that I am not and I apologized and I’ve moved on.” However, despite her many apologies, she refuses to answer the one burning question — “Have you been vaccinated?” — to which she replies, yet again, “I have apologized and I have moved on. Next question. Thanks.”
The Queen Ramonda actress, Angela Bassett, and Marvel producer, Nate Moore had heavily advocated for Wright before the sequel film’s release and the latter claimed, “She only ever was the utmost professional and a joy to have around.” Rumors about the sequel’s ending being changed in light of the controversies surrounding its lead actress have never been confirmed.
