Barbie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling among a star-studded cast has been released alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Given the excitement fans are showering love on both projects, there are surprising elements that continue to bring us back to the fantasy land featuring Mattel’s iconic doll world.
Ryan Gosling Was Afraid to Wax for Barbie
He shared that his mother has been asking to wax for years however when the film director, Greta Gerwig, and Robbie approached him for Ken’s role, it required him to completely mold himself to the plastic guy. He chose to shave them rather than opting for a difficult procedure.
He mentioned,
“I don’t want to answer that right now” when his co-star reminded him that his skin got “so silky smooth.” The La La Land actor chose to shave rather than waxing which was something he was not comfortable doing.
He recalled,
“There was a wax room. This is a horror movie. Just hear them screaming down the hall.”
He also mentioned that there was also a place called the shaving room when the DC actress chimed in to share,
“A lot of hair removal that was needed to depict Barbie land. A lot of hair like no hair down here[pointing at the bottom] and then so much hair up here.”
She mentioned that their wigs carried much more volume thus addition of hairs was important on the top. However, Gosling was scared to even wax his body which is something his co-star, Simu Liu overcame for the sake of his role.
Simu Liu Endured Waxing to Play One of the Other Kens in Barbie
“It was incredible… minus the body waxing. Yeah, Kens don’t… you got to present an even, doll-like complexion. To do that, you gotta get rid of the hair. I mean, within reason!”
He continued to speak about the pragmatic approach the film took to portray the iconic dolls.
“But, there was a lot of waxing where I have never waxed before. Aside from that, it was incredible. A wonderful, vibrant set, so much of it was practical. So much singing, and dancing and music.”
Even the titular actress mentioned that many Kens had to experience the nightmare of waxing but we all know that their efforts had paid off.
Barbie is running in theatres now.
