"Things like that don’t happen often": Across the Spider-Verse Music Composer Refused to Make a Better Song Than Post Malone's 'Sunflower'

Metro Boomin has talent written all over him. The music producer is exceptionally gifted and has built an extraordinary legacy in a very short period of time. He has collaborated with industry titans in massive projects to deliver top chartbusters. However, at the same time, he also comes across as a humble individual who is courteous and respectful toward his peers in the industry. Across the Spider-Verse was a landmark film that broke many records and achieved iconic status in the industry.

Among the many successful aspects of the film was the music in it. It helped propel the movie to even bigger heights. However, Boomin’s songs were not as successful as Post Malone’s Sunflower, which the singer created for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse made. The track topped many charts worldwide.

However, when it came to Boomin, he declared that he was not competing with that song, which broke many records and was super successful. He claimed that he wanted to do justice to the opportunity given to him to create tracks for its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, which is what he did.

The 2023 American computer-animated superhero film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse received an overwhelming response from the audience and critics alike. The film grossed millions of dollars at the global box office.

In addition to the film’s fascinating plot and thrilling scenes, the music contributed by the A-list singers captivated the audience’s attention. Celebrated American record producer Metro Boomin created the original soundtrack for Across the Spider-Verse.

In a candid interview with Variety, the famous record executive shared that Malone’s song received widespread acclaim, topped several charts, and made history with 18 times platinum status. He said he was not trying to outperform the success of that song and wanted to make something unique that the listener would enjoy. Metro Boomin told the outlet,

“Sunflower was a great record — was it 17 times platinum or something like that, something insane. And things like that don’t happen often, so I didn’t even want to go into it with the mind of how am I going to top Sunflower? So more than trying to make a song that’s 20 times platinum, I just wanted to focus on making a great album and a listening experience from top to bottom that you’re just going to want to keep playing.”

When asked how he began his collaboration with the makers of Across the Spider-Verse, he said,

“They would send me packs of scenes. Most of them were halfway finished, but I’d get an idea and just really draw inspiration from those. Then there were early cuts of the full film. I’d watch those, go back to the studio, work on some stuff. Maybe in a couple more months, there’d be another cut, and then I’d watch that and go back to the studio.”

Boomin stated that the plot and comedy in the film inspired him a lot in creating those tracks,

“Because they had already set the bar with the film, so I just wanted to see how sonically I could support that as much as I could. I was just inspired, by so many colors and all the different animations in the film, so I took a more melodic approach to the whole soundtrack from the beats to the songwriting and singing and everything.”

The music composer Metro Boomin said that he might not make a track that would be twenty times platinum, but he would do his best to deliver a number of songs that would intrigue the listeners and the audience. His songs in Across the Spider-Verse featured his collaboration with top-tier singers, including A$AP Rocky, Lil Wayne, and 21 Savage.
