“They wanted George Clooney to be gay so badly”: Batman Director Set the Record Straight on Clooney’s Dark Knight Being Gay Based on His Own Sexuality

Back in 1997, Joel Schumacher and George Clooney created the hilariously failed movie Batman & Robin. Among several controversies that the movie went through, one that was equally hilarious and out-of-the-blue was the allegations that Batman and Robin were gay.

Since the director himself was a homosexual, there were allegations that he had purposefully added some homoerotic elements to the movie. The claims were refused by the director but also added that the gay community loved Clooney so much that they actually wanted the actor to be gay in the movie!

A Community Allegedly Wanted George Clooney To Be Gay!

Batman & Robin featured a comedic revamp of the iconic characters of Batman and Robin. In an aim to sell merchandise and appeal to kids, the movie failed to match the standards of the audiences which was set by the 1995 movie Batman Forever.

With George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell starring as Batman and Robin, fans have alleged that the movie featured several homoerotic materials that tried to make the characters have some kind of chemistry between them. Joel Schumacher, who is homosexual himself, was charged with allegations that he had purposefully made these adjustments. The director refused these claims. He did add, however, that George Clooney was so famous in gay communities that the people actually wanted his character to be gay in the movie!

“There were a lot of people who I would say, in one particular community, wanted George Clooney to be gay so badly. The only people who ever said that to me were definitely gay men. I think it happens with people that are romantic s-x symbols who are on somebody’s wish list.”

This wasn’t all since the director stated that even before he helmed the movie as its director, people had already assumed that Batman and Robin were gay and had relation of some kind even in the comics too!

In his interview, the director remarked that since he was a gay individual himself the allegations were thrown on him. Joel Schumacher further stated that Batman and Robin had already been gay long before he put himself in the director’s seat.

“If I wasn’t gay, they would never say those things. This all started way before me. Long before I came along, someone wrote a whole thing about what the real message of fairy tales and children’s stories are. Snow White was all about having bad stepmothers. And Batman and Robin are two homosexual men living in a cave, living together. There’s always been this thing about Batman and Robin being gay.”

The director has clearly confirmed that Batman and Robin were indeed not gay in the 1997 movie Batman & Robin but fans couldn’t help but laugh at the hilarity of the situation.

Batman & Robin is available to stream on Max.
