Ever since James Gunn became one of the CEOs of DC Universe, it seems that everything that the franchise worked so hard and established over the years is coming tumbling down. Although they have produced some good works as well, the supervisor has left several fans furious and disappointed over his choices for the DCU, especially his decision for a soft reboot for the franchise, starting from eliminating parts of the SnyderVerse.
However, it seems that canceling the SnyderVerse has hit Gunn hard, judging from how he gave minimal input for Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle despite being the main supervisor of all DC content, as revealed by the film’s director, Angel Manuel Soto.
James Gunn Gives Minimal Input For Blue Beetle After Canceling SnyderVerse Hits Him Hard
Being the main supervisor for all the content produced by DC, James Gunn has been moving forward toward a somewhat new DC Universe ever since he became the co-CEO of the franchise. However, despite holding this position, he gave minimal input for the upcoming movie from the studio, Blue Beetle. The Xolo Maridueña starrer film’s director, Angel Manuel Soto shared in a recent interview,
“The studio always, generally, has their hands on it. As far as the essence of the story, [James Gunn and Peter Safran] liked what we were doing and they respected the vision and what we were trying to do with the film.”
He further went on to reveal how neither Peter Safran, the other co-CEO of DC, nor Gunn had much to say about the movie after watching its final version, somewhat agreeing with the director and not suggesting any last-minute changes.
“They really did appreciate the fresh take, the nostalgic factor of how we start the film by taking the audience to see the family and fall in love with them for a prologue-of-sorts. We didn’t want to treat them like props. We want to give them arcs. They all deserve the attention that we give them. The love that you feel for them makes everything that happen more visceral.”
While Soto’s take on the movie makes it sound worth watching, eliminating the SnyderVerse from DCU taking a toll on James Gunn sounds like a possible reason behind his recent behavior towards the movie as well as the franchise.
Will Blue Beetle Get To Spawn A Sequel If Successful?
Where on the one hand, Angel Manuel Soto‘s description of the upcoming superhero movie from DC makes it seem like it would be different and better than the other recent flops from the franchise, Blue Beetle‘s future in DCU remains undecided.
Although James Gunn had earlier left the audiences confused by calling Blue Beetle to be ‘the first DCU character’, however, its has now been confirmed that the official new DCU 2.0 will be starting with Superman: Legacy (2025). This makes Xolo Maridueña’s further involvement in the universe an unknown mystery.
But judging from the upcoming movie’s early box-office productions that look more than promising, the actor’s character just might find its way much farther into the franchise and maybe even spawn sequels. As for now, fans will just have to wait to see what events actually take place.
Blue Beetle is set to release on the 18th of August, 2023.
