From his breakout role as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones to his more recent roles as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian and Joel in The Last of Us, Pedro Pascal has become known for his ability to play complex characters with a fierce devotion to their loved ones. However, with his upcoming role in the Star Wars series, The Book of Boba Fett, there are concerns that the actor might become typecast.
In a recent interview, The Mandalorian co-creator Jon Favreau expressed his admiration for Pascal’s performances and shared his thoughts on the actor’s future in the industry.
From Mandalorian to The Last of Us: Jon Favreau’s admiration for Pedro Pascal
There’s a protective father not in a very communicative relationship, and he goes by the name of Din Djarin in The Mandalorian. As the show gears up for its highly anticipated Season 3, fans are eagerly waiting to see what adventures await the bounty hunter and his precious cargo, Grogu. But, it seems like Jon Favreau, the co-creator of the show, has his eyes on another project featuring the show’s lead actor, Pedro Pascal.
The Last of Us, based on popular video games, stars Pascal in a very similar role as Joel, a father figure trying to protect a young girl named Ellie played by Bella Ramsey from the dangers of a post-apocalyptic world. Favreau recently revealed that he’s been watching the show and is a big fan of Pascal’s performance. He even professed his admiration for the show’s creators, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
“It’s a great show, by the way. I’ve been on the road, I missed the last one, so I don’t want any spoilers. He’s great!”
However, while Favreau is thrilled to see Pascal in another role that showcases his talents as a protective father figure, he does worry that the actor might get typecast.
Jon Favreau’s Concerns for Pedro Pascal’s Typecasting as Protective Father Figure
Pedro Pascal has been making waves in the entertainment industry with his portrayals of protective father figures in some of the most popular shows and movies of recent times. With Pascal also set to star in the upcoming Star Wars series, The Book of Boba Fett, Favreau expressed concern that audiences might only see him as this specific character.
“It’s amazing how much he’s really cornered the market on this dad, protective father archetype.
But while Favreau worries that Pascal might get typecast as the “dad, protective father” figure, he also points out that the characters are quite different.
But they’re different characters, though! Completely different characters, but both have that same… There’s a central relationship of modeling a protective father in a not very communicative relationship.”
Din Djarin is a bounty hunter who takes on the responsibility of caring for Baby Yoda, while Joel is a survivor of a fungal pandemic who is tasked with escorting a young girl across the country. Both are fiercely protective of their charges, but their personalities and motivations are distinct.
It’s clear that Favreau has a deep admiration for Pedro Pascal and his talents as an actor. While he may worry about Pascal’s future typecasting, he’s also excited to see what the actor can bring to his roles in The Last of Us and The Book of Boba Fett. And fans of The Mandalorian can look forward to seeing more of Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventures in Season 3.
The Mandalorian returns to Disney+ on 1 March.
