“There was some goodness in myself”: Ezra Miller Knew Friends and Family Would Pull Them Back If Things Went Out of Hand in $10M Movie

Ezra Miller went through a rough time last year, and after the allegations and controversies, the actor seems to be doing well following the decision to undergo rehabilitation. Returning from the dark abyss, Miller finally reprised their role as Barry Allen in Warner Bros’ The Flash.

In a not-so-strange coincidence, Miller may have hinted something about mental health struggle in an old interview for a previous project. The movie tackled sensitive topics most relevant to troubled teenagers.

Ezra Miller Was Willing To Sacrifice Mental Health For A Movie Role

We Need to Talk About Kevin is a 2011 psychological thriller drama helmed by Lynne Ramsay. It starred Ezra Miller, Tilda Swinton, and John C. Reilly. The story follows Eva Khatchadourian, a travel writer who gives up her career in order to build a family. She had a hard time accepting the decision, but things got worse when she and her husband welcomed a baby boy.

Miller portrayed Kevin, as a destructive teenager estranged from his parents, and even more dangerous to other people. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the lead star revealed if there were any negative effects on their mental health brought by playing such a dark character:

No, I always had enough faith that there was some goodness in myself that would await me on the other side of the abyss. I held confidence that even if I couldn’t do it, my friends and family could potentially pull me back.”

The actor was only 18 then, and despite the young age, there was no worry on Miller’s part:

While making the film, I decided to not worry about it and take that leap. I was so passionate about this project that I would have happily lost my mind forever in service of the film. This wouldn’t be the worst thing to lose your mind for.”

There was no therapist present during the filming, as Miller revealed, but there was an on-set medic in case of emergency. The actor believes there should have been a psychologist; unfortunately, they were all left to their own self-soothing devices:

I essentially allowed myself to be in a state of emotional discomfort during the time that we were making that film, but we did occasionally play music together… Loud, goofy music playing was one of the best methods of self-soothing.”

While it seemed Miller managed to balance everything during the film’s production, the star revealed that, for the most part, they just allowed the emotional and physical discomfort to linger.

As for the current state of Ezra Miller’s mental health, The Flash director Andy Muschietti spoke at the recent movie screening and said (via Collider):

They’re taking the steps to recovery. Ezra is dealing with mental health issues, but they’re well. We talked to them not too long ago, and they’re very committed to getting better.”

While the filmmaker’s statement is not as specific as the attendees would have expected, Miller assured fans that they are completely focused on their journey to mental health recovery. The actor has apologized for their indecent behavior and has taken the necessary treatment.

We Need to Talk About Kevin is available on Prime Video, AppleTV, and Netflix. Meanwhile, The Flash is now showing in theaters worldwide.
