Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is remembered as the second-best debut movie of that year. Even though the movie turned out to be lucrative for both Angelina Jolie and Daniel Craig, the latter went on to win the iconic 007 role, it’s not only Craig who remains dissatisfied with the Simon West-directed film based on the Tomb Raider video game series. Jolie too has her fair share of regrets despite the movie’s box-office success.
Angie Dind’t Find The Real-Life Version Of Lara Croft Appealing
Daniel Craig, who has finally hung his James Bond tuxedo, once called Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, “the worst mistake he made“, even though that “worst mistake” grossed over $275 million worldwide. While Craig questioned the movie’s potential, it was Angelina Jolie who wasn’t satisfied with her role in the titular character. The Maleficent star shared in an interview:
“I wasn’t satisfied with it. Through the making of that film, we were all still trying to figure out how things worked, and we were trying to make the video game into a person, but still, it was the video game.”
The Unbroken director revealed that the way Lara Croft was made to look in the movie wasn’t s*xy or real at all. She continued, “There were a lot of things, and we couldn’t adjust to everything right.” In the Simon West-directed film, Jolie plays Lara Croft, who defeats a robot in an Egyptian tomb, which turns out to be a training exercise arena in her family manor.
A sequel, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, was released in 2003, but the movie did not meet its predecessors’ box office performance, grossing only $156 million compared to Lara Croft: Tomb Raiders‘ $275 million worldwide box-office collection.

Angelina Jolie is well-known for doing her own stunts in her movies. While Lara Croft remains one of her most recognizable roles, Jolie wasn’t sure about signing up for it. During an interview, she revealed that she declined the role at one stage, saying, “I said, ‘I really didn’t feel like that character suited me.’ I actually didn’t at first want to do it; I said no.”
But again, Jolie loves to travel and do as many of her own stunts as possible, something that was being offered. Jolie was conveyed that she would be able to travel the world and train with the British military. This was enough to change her heart, as Jolie is always up for new adventures.
Angelina Jolie had three months to prepare for the movie and push herself to the limit, but she always loved these challenges. She went on to star in Those Who Wish Me Dead, a movie that came with a good deal of stuntwork, like jumping off a 60-foot-tall fire tower. Interestingly, she credits the 2001 Tom Raider for knowing the value of doing her own stunts.
