Between 2015 and 2019, Lucasfilm Ltd produced the third trilogy of the cult Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas. The trilogy consisted of episodes 7 to 9, chronologically following the prequel trilogy ( episodes 1 to 3) and the original trilogy (episodes 4 and 5), serving as the final act of the Skywalker saga. Lucasfilm is now in the process of producing Star Wars: Lost Horizons due to release in 2025.
The film though has been at the centre of many controversial talking points and debates even before the official start of its production. Firstly, John Boyega who played Finn in the trilogy, created a stir with his allegations of racism that he felt, affected the development of his character. Now with writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson officially being asked to back out from scripting the narrative of the 2025 film, the franchise is looking to make many tangible changes.
Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars: Lost Horizons Script Did Not Impress Lucasfilm
Speaking on John Rocha’s Hot Mic Podcast in March, Hollywood insider Jeff Schneider addressed the ongoing conflicts that were plaguing the production of Lucasfilm’s next Star Wars installment, Star Wars: Lost Horizons. Speaking of the ousting of writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson from the project, Schneider gave his take and said,
“The first thing that I heard, and this is from a very good source, is that the first draft [of Damon Lindelof’s script] was not good. If it was good then they’d find ways to work things out. So at first I heard that the draft wasn’t good”
Schenider also revealed that Lindelof was unaware of the historic appointment of Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to helm the film. The Miss Marvel director and Lindelof were reported to have not seen eye to eye creatively in earlier projects as per Schneider’s sources. But Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy’s insistence on bringing Obaid-Chinoy into the fold despite Lindelof being a prolific veteran writer may have most probably resulted in him walking out of the project.
What To Expect from Star Wars: Lost Horizons
Following the departure of Damon Lindelof, Lucasfilm appointed Steven Knight to take over from the Watchmen writer. Knight’s version will reportedly be set sometime after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and will not be tied to the Skywalker saga. The narrative is said to commence decades after the collapse of the Galactic Empire with the rise of the New Republic being troubled by a new threat that can only be saved from destruction by a lost Jedi Knight.
The film which will begin filming in the coming months, was officially announced at the annual Star Wars celebration which kicked off this time in London on April 7-10th 2023. Apart from announcing the official title of the 2025 film which is Star Wars: Lost Horizons, Lucasfilm also revealed their long-term plans to create 3 more Star Wars films including developing one which will be set 15 years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker.
