The Highly Anticipated Mortal Kombat 11 Sequel Is Nearly Here; And With It Peacemaker and Homelander?

Series creator Ed Boon has again been teasing the latest instalment of the popular fighting game Mortal Kombat, and in a week where news has been rife about the sequel to the most recent film adaptation casting Karl Urban, we’re now also getting some exciting news and tidbits about the game.

Long time fans will be well aware that the game has had a long and complicated story to follow since its inception back in 1992, and with numerous spin-offs from the main eleven entries, it became too difficult to manage. That’s why many fans were thankful come the end of Mortal Kombat 11 when, if Liu Kang wins the final battle, he’s shown resetting the universe and creating a new Era, one without the evil Shang Tsung, and the events that happened before no longer occurred, technically. Whilst the story mode of the games isn’t necessarily the main draw for players, this clean slate opens a world of possibilities for the writers, and lends credence to the rumours that the upcoming game will simply be titled Mortal Kombat 1.

Not much is known regarding any concrete details around the game’s story, modes, characters available and so on, but an insider has hinted at some interesting details, which if true, would continue the series tradition of including guest characters from other realms. Predator and Jason were two of the guest characters in Mortal Kombat X, whilst the likes of Robocop, The Terminator and The Joker graced our screens in Mortal Kombat 11.

With the game itself not even announced, we can take these potential guest characters with a pinch of salt, however an insider has claimed that when the game supposedly releases this September, we’ll be able to take control of DC’s and John Cena’s Peacemaker and The Boys’ and Antony Starr’s Homelander. Both characters would drop seamlessly into the world and mechanics of Mortal Kombat, and the the thought of wrecking other players with the psychotic, unhinged Homelander is music to my ears, but again, this could all be smoke, so watch this space.

Now as much as Ed Boon seems to be having fun with creating and debunking rumours of his studio’s next game, whether it’s the heavily-rumoured Mortal Kombat 1 or the long-waited-for Injustice 3, it cannot be denied that the former is on the way. Back in February the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav announced during an earnings call that the upcoming Mortal Kombat game would be releasing this year. We’ll continue to wait for some more concrete news, but for now we have the odd teaser on Twitter from Ed Boon and a seemingly increasing amount of leaks from insiders that’ll have to sate our thirst for Mortal Kombat knowledge.
