Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid has been a hot topic of conversation since the studio announced the live-action adaptation of the Disney tale. However, the film has been surrounded with criticism regarding the casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel in the live-action adaptation. While the film’s teaser release has successfully changed the perspective of many, others are firm in their opinion.
However, it doesn’t seem like the film has suffered any damage as the anticipation for the film is already at its peak. And it would only get higher with the new update. Insider information has revealed that the upcoming film could also feature a comic rap scene with Sabastian and Scuttle.
The Little Mermaid to Feature Sebastian and Scuttle’s Rap Skills
Daveed Diggs joined the cast of The Little Mermaid in October 2019. The American actor voiced Sebastian the Crab in the series and is expected to bring more than his acting skills to Disney’s live-action adaptation. Not just Diggs, Awkwafina, who is cast as Scuttle, is also expected to bring something new to the film.
According to scooper EmberOnMain, the live-action adaptation will include a “comedic scene” featuring Diggs and Awkwafina’s characters.
“Daveed Diggs as Sebastian and Awkwafina as Scuttle will rap together in a comedic scene.”
Both the actors are also skilled in music as they have had close ties with music since they started their careers. Awkwafina started as a rapper before making a career in acting. Meanwhile, Daveed Diggs is also a vocalist and the writer of the experimental hip-hop group, Clipping.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who joined the project as producer and lyricist, also hinted that the live-action adaptation could feature Sebastian the Crab in a rap scene. According to Variety, Miranda has shared that Melissa McCarthy’s Ursula might not have an original song, but he did not rule out a rap for Diggs.
The Little Mermaid Trailer Will Debut at the 2023 Oscars
Disney recently released a new poster for the 2023 film, The Little Mermaid. The poster featuring Halle Bailey’s Ariel is considered a tribute to the original 1989 original The Little Mermaid. Along with the sign, the makers also announced that the official trailer of Disney’s live-action adaptation would be released at the 95th Academy Awards. The 2023 Oscars will be held Sunday, March 12.
The studio announced the remake in 2016, and Rob Marshall joined the film as director the following year. The film is expected to follow the same story as the 1989 animated film, where the youngest daughter of King Triton, Ariel, wants to explore the human world. After encountering Prince Eric, she seeks a sea witch, Ursula, and makes a deal to exchange her voice for a set of human legs.
The Little Mermaid is set to release on May 26, 2023.
