Hugh Jackman has quite a few iconic roles to his name spread across various genres. From playing a prince from the eighteenth century in Kate and Leopold to one of the most beloved characters of today, Wolverine, Hugh Jackman is truly an exceptional actor.
He recently played the role of Peter in Florian Zeller’s The Son (2022). While the film received disappointing reviews from critics, fans would beg to differ. The Son has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 27% on the Tomatometer, however, the audience score for the film is 68%. So while there is a conflict between fans and critics on this one, The Son wasn’t just a film for Hugh Jackman. It gave him clarity about a lot of things in his life, including his marriage.
Hugh Jackman Regrets Moving Around Too Much
Talking to The Guardian about the things he would have done differently if given the chance, Hugh Jackman stated that The Son definitely changes his outlook on parenting. He realized that while being confident and providing safety to his kids was important, it was also necessary to be open and vulnerable with them. Being vulnerable with his children and letting them know about his feelings is one of the things The Son has taught him.
“I thought my job was to project confidence and safety. And there’s an element of that, I guess, that’s true. But I think now, particularly as they’re older … being more open on my vulnerability, letting them in on what’s going on inside of me, is something I’ve learned and I would do it differently now.”
Is there anything else that Jackman believes he should’ve done a bit differently in his career? Yes. He told the outlet that if given the chance to travel back in time, he would have moved around less with his family. He stated that he and his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, had the mentality that having everyone together is the “lesser of two evils.” Jackman has regrets about this as he now believes that stability would have been of more benefit to them.
“But I thought – Deb and I thought – at the time: I’m doing movies; the lesser of two evils is to have everyone together. I’m not 100% sure, but sometimes stability may have been more beneficial.”
Furness and Jackman have been together for twenty-eight years now and have two children. Their love story is one full of hope and wonders as Jackman asked her to marry him just four months after dating. As he told Today, he knew he and Furness were going to be together forever just two weeks into their relationship. He sure is keeping his promise and if these aren’t relationship goals we don’t know what are.
Hugh Jackman Regrets Not Being Selective
As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, Jackman has time and again surprised us with great characters. Whether it is The Greatest Showman, X-Men, Prisoners, or Rise of the Guardians, Jackman is a master of all trades. However, he does have a bit of regret about his career. He told The Guardian that instead of jumping into any and all roles that were given to him, he should have been more selective.
“There was a period where things were hitting for me and I felt like: I’ve got to take this opportunity. But I look back now and I go: you could have just completely chilled out there and everything would have been fine.”
Well, his fans for one are grateful he did the roles he did. It sure is a bit unsettling to imagine another actor filling in the shoes for some of Jackman’s roles! We can’t wait to see what the actor has in store for us with his upcoming movie Deadpool 3 releasing on November 08, 2024!
