The Flash Heading Towards Johnny Depp’s $250M Biggest Box-Office Disaster as Ezra Miller Starrer Records Massive 75% Drop

Johnny Depp has been part of one of the biggest movie franchises of all time- Pirates of the Caribbean. The five films in the franchise earned a combined mammoth $4.5 billion at the box office. However, the star has also been a part of a few flops and one disastrous box office result as well.

But it looks like the actor, who has had a rough 2022 due to a legal dispute with ex-partner Amber Heard, is finally getting on his feet again. Things are looking up for him because it looks like he won’t have to carry the tag of delivering the worst flop in Hollywood for much longer. It’s possible that Ezra Miller’s The Flash might take that from him.

Initially, The Flash was projected to be one of the biggest grossers of the year. After all, it had everything going for it. The film was stacked with iconic characters, its first trailer released at Super Bowl was received well, and celebrities like Tom Cruise praised it. However, it’s becoming clear that the general audience has completely rejected it.

The film has a mammoth budget between $220 to $300 million, and till now, it has only managed to rake in $145 million. The split between international markets and domestic is almost the same, with $73 million and $72 million, respectively. To make matters worse, it’s projected to drop an eye-watering 75% from last week.

As such, it would earn only $14 million, making it the highest drop for a superhero film at the domestic box office. But there’s more. This will make the film compete for the title of one of the biggest box office bombs with Johnny Depp‘s Lone Ranger (2013) and Taylor Kitsch’s John Carter (2012). Both the films had budgets of $225 million and $263 million and went on to earn $260 million and $282 million, respectively. The Flash is looking to earn in that range as well.

Scooper Daniel Richtman explained this in his tweet well:

As such, it’s becoming a possibility that not only will The Flash not hit $300 million worldwide, it could gross lower than Johnny Depp’s Lone Ranger or at least join it as one of the biggest box office bombs of Hollywood. But why is the Andy Muschietti-directed movie failing so miserably?

The Flash’s poor box office performance has baffled many. After all, it’s almost unknown for superhero films or even big tentpole films to gross this low, especially now that we are living in the golden era of superhero films. However, many speculate that a multitude of factors has contributed to this ongoing trainwreck.

The film has been mired in controversy for a long time thanks to Ezra Miller‘s off-screen alleged criminal activities. While that’s a contributing factor in the film’s downfall, the biggest reason the general audience is turning away from the film is due to its poor CGI. Plenty of memes have been made on the cartoonish VFX already.

People are also seemingly mad at WBD for including the late Christopher Reeve and late George Reeves in the cameos through what has been termed as digital necromancy. But perhaps the biggest contributing factor is the fact that general audiences have no love or trust in the DC brand and don’t think that they can deliver great films. As such, it looks like it will be an upward climb for James Gunn and his DCU.

The Flash is in theaters currently.
