Tom Hiddleston is recognized worldwide as the actor who embodies Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The role has redefined his career and made him a global star. He has played the character multiple times throughout the franchise. The popularity and love that the character has received from the audience has led Marvel to develop a solo Disney+ series titled Loki (2021) which turned out to be a huge success. He has also ventured into other genres and non-MCU projects including Midnight in Paris (2011), War Horse (2011), High-Rise (2015), I Saw the Light (2015), and Kong: Skull Island (2017) to name a few. He is a versatile actor who can commit to any role and deliver a convincing and impressive performance. Recently, he talked about his career as an actor and his approach to acting.
Tom Hiddleston Will Quit Acting if He Ever Stops Being Nervous
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Tom Hiddleston talked about his career in Hollywood, his start in the theater business, and his approach towards acting. When asked about his early theater days and his nerves before performing, he said,
“I think the day you stop getting nervous is the day you should stop. But I try to convert my nerves into a positive”
Hiddleston’s comments are indicative of his commitment and dedication towards acting. The nerves that an actor deals with while tackling a role are important as they drive the actor to work hard to perfect the role. He has no insecurities being an actor and loves the process of performing and delighting a group of audience whether it be doing theater or a movie.
He credits director Kenneth Branagh for taking a chance with a nobody like him and giving him the role of a lifetime. He said,
“It had a life-changing effect on me. It happened quite organically, almost by accident. He saw me in a Shakespeare production in a theater in London, then asked me to perform with him in the television series Wallander for the BBC. We then did a Chekhov play in the West End, and then he cast me as Loki in the first Thor film. So actually we ended up spending about 12 months working together in different media. Just from being able to watch him, closely. Then he would prepare to shoot, to execute, to perform. He always treated me as an equal. At the end of that experience, I had learned so much from him”
The role of Loki would become the most recognized and celebrated role of his career. He has already played the character for more than ten years and still finds ways to make the character fresh and entertaining while avoiding the trap of repeating himself.
Tom Hiddleston Also Makes Time for his Family and Personal Space
Tom Hiddleston has also talked about the importance of maintaining one’s own identity and stability while portraying several characters in films. He took a brief hiatus from films after Avengers: Endgame (2019). He spoke to Empire about the importance of maintaining and spending quality time with family and friends during his break. He acknowledges that the hiatus was a planned decision on his end saying,
“I’d been playing so many different people in so many different parts of the world, and it’s very important to distinguish what’s real in one’s own life, and look after those things. Because if you don’t look after them, they can be lost, or they can be marginalized, and then you come home one day and they’re not there anymore.”
Hiddleston took a much-needed break to spend time with family and loved ones. It is necessary to maintain such a healthy balance between one’s personal and professional life to ensure one’s stability and happiness. As dedicated as Hiddleston is to his craft, he makes sure that he finds time for his family and does not necessarily sideline them due to his job as an actor.
