Irish actor Colin Farrell is known for his roles in some of the best movies like Miami Vice, Total Recall, Ava, Thirteen Lives, and more. Farrell started acting in the BBC show Ballykissangel in 1998. He appeared in his first movie, The War Zone, in 1999, but he became well-known after starring in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi film Minority Report in 2002.
After featuring in some of the biggest movies, his hard work officially paid off this year — when the star received his first-ever Oscar nomination for his leading role in the tragicomic Irish film The Banshees of Inisherin.
No doubt, Farrell has appeared in many great recent movies, but there’s one historical drama from his career that he’d rather put behind him.
The Worst Movie of Colin Farrell, Which He Would Like to Forget
One of Colin Farrell‘s career low points was the 2000s film Alexander. In this historical epic directed by Oliver Stone, Farrell played the role of the renowned Alexander the Great.
The movie was based on the life of Alexander the Great, the Macedonian king who conquered places like Asia Minor, Egypt, Persia, and part of Ancient India. It shows important parts of his youth, his invasion of the powerful Persian Empire, and his death.
Both Colin Farrell and the director put their hearts into making this new movie because it was a passion project for them. Colin Farrell said in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter:
“Expectation is a dangerous thing. Alexander was a story that Oliver Stone had dreamed of since he was in college. So, as grand as it was, as global as it was, as political as it was, as thrilling as it was, as violent as it was, and as sensual as it was, it was really personal — to Oliver and to me.”
His disappointment looks real as Alexander didn’t perform well at the box office and fell flat on its face.
Colin Farrell Expected Oscar for Alexander, But It Failed Miserably
Colin Farrell mentioned that the team was in high spirits during production and even expected Oscar nominations. But, when the reviews were published, everyone’s heart sank as people began to express that the epic movie wasn’t up to par. Farrell found this surprising and said to The Hollywood Reporter:
“I was like: ‘Well, what do you mean not good?’ I felt so much shame. I found myself in a place where with everyone I met, I wanted to say: ‘Have you seen Alexander? If you have, I’m really sorry’. I’m not even joking. I wasn’t going to give them their $20million back, but…”
The actor openly shared that he took some time off at a ski resort at Lake Tahoe to recover because he felt sorry for himself. It was a moment of reflection for him — glad he did that because he was able to make some of the finest movies after that.
