The announcement of Henry Cavill’s exit from the helm of The Witcher wasn’t easy on anyone, including the fans and the creators of the Netflix Original. However, Cavill’s departure won’t be the end of Geralt’s story, as not long after the Man of Steel star said his goodbyes, Liam Hemsworth was chosen to replace Cavill in the role of Geralt of Rivia.
However, with season 3 of the show inching toward its release, The Witcher showrunner expressed that they did consider other options rather than recasting Geralt. She also went on to reflect on the future of the show without its main attraction at the forefront after the third season.
The Witcher Showrunner claims they considered ending the show with Henry Cavill’s exit
The Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich recently reflected on the current landscape of the show and expressed her viewpoint regarding Henry Cavill‘s exit. The Showrunner explained that at one point, following the Man of Steel star’s departure, they did consider ending the show with Geralt’s exit. However, she stressed that there were too many stories left in The Witcher mythos to put the kibosh on it. She explained,
“It was time for him in his life to move on. I think we’ve all been mourning this in our own way. We had the choice to have Geralt exit and to end the show. [But] that’s not something that we were willing to do. There’s just too many stories left to tell.”
She further touched on the topic of why they weren’t moving forward with another Witcher character and chose to recast Geralt, as she states, “If we replaced Geralt with another Witcher, we would be going fully away from the books, and I don’t think that’s what anyone wanted either.“ But with the show set to move in a new direction after the third season, Hissrich seems confident about Hemsworth’s potential to carry the show forward.
The Witcher Showrunner is optimistic about its future
The announcement of Liam Hemsworth set to take the mantle of Geralt moving forward wasn’t received well by the fandom, as replacing Henry Cavill as the lead isn’t an easy job to pull off. But it seems showrunner Lauren Hissrich is pretty optimistic about this new chapter in the Netflix show, as she reflected on the gravity of the responsibility on Hemsworth’s shoulders. She said,
“We’re all excited about Liam coming in. He’s got enormous shoes to fill, but also has a lot of energy and a lot of excitement for it. It’s obviously a brand-new chapter for us. And there’s a lot of things involved. But at the end of the day we love what we’re doing and we’re gonna keep going.“
But Hissrich isn’t the only person who is confident about Hemsworth taking the iconic role under his wing, as The Witcher casting director also had a similar perspective on the matter.
The Witcher Season 3 Volume 1 will release on June 29 and Volume 2 on July 27 on Netflix.
