The Marvel Cinematic Universe is seemingly hell-bent on crawling out of the slump it created for itself through Phase 4. Now, as the MCU is headed into the next few phases, there are a few projects fans are truly looking forward to, including Thunderbolts, an anti-hero team-up.
In order to redeem itself, MCU might be bringing a popular comic book villain to pose as a hindrance to the villainous group. The villain is none other than Robert Reynolds aka Sentry himself. Now, Sentry is one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel comics. Therefore, fans are a bit skeptical about the idea of putting him against the Thunderbolts as they believe there is a huge difference in their powers. However, some are siding with MCU on this one and comparing it to the plot of The Boys.

Amazon Prime’s The Boys is a widely popular and loved series that shows the world-saving superheroes in a different light than usual. Aiming to show the “reality” of the so-called supes, The Boys has Homelander, played by Antony Starr, as their main antagonist. Now while over the seasons, characters have tried to bring Homelander down and reveal his true self to the public, Homelander keeps getting Ws after Ws, simply because he’s way too powerful than the rest.
So when it comes to Sentry, an insanely powerful supervillain, potentially standing against the Thunderbolts, fans were a bit skeptical about the whole idea. They believe that the Thunderbolts’ powers are no match to that of Sentry’s and they would eventually end up losing the fight. However, some fans on Twitter were quick to point out that if Thunderbolts does have Sentry as its antagonist, the story is quite similar to that of The Boys. Fans compared Sentry to Homelaneder and stood in alliance with MCU’s idea.
At this moment, Sentry being Thunderbolts’ villain is just a speculation as nothing has been officially revealed. However, if Sentry does end up making his MCU debut, fans shouldn’t worry too much as the Studios do have a history of making characters diluted and less powerful than in the comic books. We just hope they don’t do that with Kang the Conqueror, who is all set to appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania!

How Powerful is Sentry Exactly?
Across the multiverse, Sentry is a feared supervillain who can wipe out superhero after superhero as if it was breakfast to him. Thanks to the consumption of the Golden Sentry Serum, Robert Reynolds was granted the powers of “a million exploding suns.” Often compared in power to DCU’s Superman himself, Sentry possesses a number of powers. These include flight, strength, psychic abilities, manipulation, regeneration, and so on.
Sentry’s biggest enemy isn’t the Avengers, but himself. A destructive entity linked to Robert Reynolds, The Void is Sentry’s much darker half and can wipe out the entire planet if unleashed. In an issue of What If… (#200), Sentry managed to kill Luke Cage, Thor, and Captain America.
All of this is just a glimpse of the power Sentry holds. If the Thunderbolts do end up fighting him, we can only hope they make it out alive. Of course, that is if Sentry doesn’t get watered down by the MCU.
The confirmed characters in Thunderbolts include Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barned (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).
Thunderbolts is expected to release in July 2024.
