James Gunn was the director of one of the most successful Marvel Cinematic Universe franchises, Guardians of the Galaxy. The first film of the trilogy was released in 2014, followed by the second part in 2017, and the final installment released in 2023. The films were commercial and critical hits, garnering a massive fan following. However, it was also the franchise that had a cuss word.
Marvel movie makers have always been very careful about the usage of cuss words. None of the movies were allowed one, however, James Gunn broke the barricade with his Chris Pratt film.
Chris Pratt on Use of Cuss Words in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3
Chris Pratt, who plays the role of Peter Quill in Guardians of The Galaxy, graced Jimmy Kimmel Live. In the episode, he was asked about using curse words in the film, as the host joked about Samuel L. Jackson not getting the honor to do the same. Kimmel twisted Jackson’s character name in Marvel Universe,
“He must be Nick Furious right now.”
Pratt said,
“He’s Nick Furious. I think everybody’s tried [to use the F-word before], you know?”
Chris Pratt added,
“Everyone’s always lobbying, like, throwing it out in improv, trying to get it in there.”
“For years I’ve tried, it’s not the first time I tried to get [a curse] in a movie, and they edited it together, and it was a funny beat, so they kept it.”
In a conversation with Variety, he said,
“Yes, I do drop the first F-bomb. Take that Samuel L. Jackson!”
On being asked if the curse word was in the script, Pratt said,
“No, it was not. It was not scripted.”
“Everyone’s been trying to improv F-bombs for 10 different years … and finally one made it in. Usually when you start dropping F-bombs in like an improv scenario, it’s really your indication to the filmmaker that you’d like to move on — and they actually put it into the film, so that’s pretty good. I’m really proud. I did it!”
The Motion Picture Association film rating system allows the use of only one F-word (in a non-sexual context) to get the PG-13 tag instead of R. GOTG was a PG-13 film, due to intense violence, strong language, suggestive/drug references, and other thematic elements.
James Gunn’s Reaction to the Use of Cuss Words in Guardians of the Galaxy
Jimmy Kimmel asked the star if the team, behind the camera, was aware of getting into a different territory. Pratt shared that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige went to Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and said,
“Listen, you don’t wanna be the guy who is known for having the first F-word in your movie.”
He added,
“And James was like, ‘Yes I do! That’s exactly [what I want]. Don’t you know me?’ And so they kept it in.”
Guardians of The Galaxy 3 was released this year and grossed $805.9 million worldwide. The ensemble cast includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Will Poulter, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Linda Cardellini, Nathan Fillion, and Sylvester Stallone.
