Former model, Uma Thurman ventured into acting by delving into several genres of roles, whether it be action or rom-com. She got international recognition with her portrayal of Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Since then, she was seen in a variety of films and got to work with several A-listers including George Clooney.
She also starred as Poison Ivy in Batman & Robin (1997), taking on the antagonist role against George Clooney’s protagonist Batman. Despite the film getting major criticism, she was happy with being a part of it.
Uma Thurman on Her Experience Working in Batman & Robin
In a 2020 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Uma Thurman reflected on her time in Batman & Robin which was released in June 1997. In the Warner Bros. film, she played the role of a supervillain, Poison Ivy who is among the formidable foes of Batman.
She talked about having a great time filming the project. Being helmed by Joel Schumacher, the film starred George Clooney as the caped crusader, Chris O’Donnell as Robin, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the villain role, Mr. Freeze.
“I was just talking about Joel Schumacher, the director who is a friend I love so much. … I loved Joel Schumacher.”
She added,
“That was a fantastic experience. I had to wear lots of rubber suits.”
Though rubber suits were what she had to wear given her role, she was happy with the fact that the role featured her own face. “I did not have a rubber mask,” she continues. “I had my own face. But I had some rubber appliances on my face sometimes. That was about as much rubber as I’ve ever worked with, personally.”
While her excitement would have justified the role she was doing at the time, the film was unable to meet critics’ expectations.
Batman & Robin is Among The Worst Made Batman Films!
Despite the film starring an ensemble cast who were pretty much-rising stars at the time, it garnered unfavorable reviews from critics. Due to the same, it even earned a spot among the worst films ever made. Acclaimed film critic Gene Siskel deemed it an “over-produced” film with the critic stating that he could have left it half away had he not been watching for work purposes.
It was criticized for its toyetic approach with critics emphasizing how the characters were unable to impress them in the entire film. What’s more ridiculous was the titular character himself as Clooney is often regarded as the worst caped crusader ever. What made his character get more criticism was his defined ni–les which was an unnecessary feature to begin with. Schumacher’s direction was also criticized making the film end on a bad note in all aspects.
