Avengers: Endgame became the deciding movie for the fate of the OG Avengers. After the release of the film, fans on the internet were completely divided. The reason for this is the departure of many characters didn’t sit well with them.

Two of the Avengers i.e Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff never got their happy ending and sacrificed themselves for the world. Speaking of Captain America, some fans were even disappointed by his character’s ending as he got a happy ending with the love of his life Peggy Carter. While fans were divided about these characters’ fate, James Gunn too didn’t like one character’s ending in the film.

Chris Hemsworth plays the role of Thor in the MCU and debuted in the year 2011. Since then, his character’s journey has been a complete rollercoaster of ups and downs. But after the finale of the Infinity Saga, where was his destiny going to take him? Well, the Russo Brothers already had some great plans for him. In Avengers: Endgame, Thor gives his mantle of King to Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie to rule the new Asgard. Thor then leaves with the Guardians and goes to space.

Well after this ending, James Gunn was confused as to how he will take forward the story of Thor with Guardians. As he didn’t have any plans to include the God of Thunder in the upcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.  That’s when Thor director Taika Waititi came into the picture and helped him out. The idea of what to do next was then revealed by Marvel Boss Kevin Feige to Gunn.

“That’s when [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] told me Taika’s gonna do ‘Thor,’ and we’ll have the Guardians in it. I said, ‘Thank God!’… To be completely honest, Thor was never going to be in this movie. Taika took a bullet for me. Because I was not going to have him in. I was just gonna start up and there’s no Thor.”

After Avengers Endgame, the God of Thunder’s journey continued in Thor: Love and Thunder, and it was also teased in the film that he will return.

Taika Waititi made sure to maintain the continuity between the two films i.e Thor Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He kept the Guardians in the first half of the movie and set them free for their upcoming final sequel. In a past interview, Waititi explained why he didn’t let Guardians back at the end of the sequel and let them go in the first part.

“The plan was always to have them in the beginning and then move on. Because they have their own movie. There was talk about having them come back at the end. The thing is that happens in every movie. No more. No more of the cavalry coming at the end. So we shelved that idea. We just wanted Jane to come in at the end.”

GOTG Vol. 3 will be the final ride of the beloved characters. James Gunn has bid adieu to the franchise and will proceed further with DCU as its CEO and Chairman.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 will be arriving in theatres on May 5th, 2023.
