New Direction For DC

This week has been a chaotic one with a plethora of news coming out of DC and Warner Bros. with the recent installation of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and DC super-producer Peter Safran as the new leaders of DC Studios.

It seems a complete shakeup of the brand is underway with the announcement that, despite him being brought back as Superman in October, he would no longer be playing Superman in any DC projects, though they stressed that they want to find him a different place in the DC Universe.

New Details Emerge From Wonder Woman Cancellation

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins also parted ways with the studio after irreconcilable differences over the direction of the third installment in the Wonder Woman franchise, stating that “It was my understanding that there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time.” Current Batman actor Ben Affleck, who has publicly stated that he does not wish to come back to the role, also met with James Gunn in order to potentially direct a project for DC Films.

With Cavill out, WW3 being shelved, Affleck leaving, Jason Momoa being eyed to be recast as Lobo, Ray Fisher publicly stating he wouldn’t work with the studio again, and Ezra Miller’s recent controversies, it seems that the entire Justice League set up by Zach Snyder has been dismantled.

Golden Globes Nominees Announced

Despite last season being the start of awards season with a few minor award announcements, it has become very real with the official announcements of all of this year’s 2023 Golden Globe nominees.

Unsurprisingly, Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery are leading in their respective categories. These films are the largest and some of the most beloved releases of this year, so the domination of these films should come as no surprise.

Gaming Film Adaptations Resurge

Henry Cavill and a Warhammer 40k Model

This past week alone we have seen a lot of exciting news around video games being adapted to film. The hit Playstation series God of War was announced to be getting a series at Amazon, while a film based on Hideo Kojima’s hit game Death Stranding was announced as well. Also in the gaming space we saw Henry Cavill sign on to star in and executive produce a series or film at Amazon based on Warhammer 40k. This comes after just over a week ago when the Super Mario Bros. Movie got the first movie clip revealed.
